RECENTLY I had the pleasure of meeting with two entrepreneurial women who impressed me with their businesses and their dedication to what they do.<\/p>\n

Elly Mirkovic, owner of Complete K9 Training, and photographer Sarah Anderson were among 10 women participating in this year’s Business Accelerator Scholarship Program.<\/p>\n

This 12-month course, led by Business in Heels, helped participants gain practical skills in business planning, marketing and financial management in a suite of workshops at council’s civic precinct Wurriki Nyal.<\/p>\n

Across our community many women are doing innovative, clever and creative things in the world of small business.<\/p>\n

And Business Accelerator Scholarship Program is just one of many initiatives providing support for women in small business or considering taking the plunge.<\/p>\n

Launching a small business takes courage and programs like these are vital in giving new start-ups the best chance of success.<\/p>\n

As Council’s Women & Community Life portfolio chair, I want to encourage women to access the fantastic range of programs on offer.<\/p>\n

I’m especially passionate about encouraging women from more disadvantaged areas of Geelong to give these programs a go.<\/p>\n

Several events are coming up that could help you develop your small business acumen and turn your commercial dream into a reality.<\/p>\n

Next Tuesday, 28 October, the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) will run a free live webinar designed to educate employers about e-invoicing, how it works, product information, its benefits and more.<\/p>\n

Then, on Thursday 30 October, the City of Greater Geelong’s Investment and Economy team will visit Biyal-a, Armstrong Creek Library for a free Business Support Drop-in.<\/p>\n

From 10am to 3pm the team can support you with:<\/p>\n

Navigating council permits, regulations and compliance<\/p>\n

Discovering programs, services and resources available to your business, and<\/p>\n

Identifying opportunities to help your business thrive.<\/p>\n

You can also book a 30-minute one-on-one appointment for tailored advice.<\/p>\n

The Investment and Economy team will also visit Lara Library for similar drop in on 26 November.<\/p>\n

On Thursday 13 November, Business in Heels will host a Geelong Mentor Evening, proudly supported by the City of Greater Geelong.<\/p>\n

Guided by influential female leaders from across our region, this ticketed event is designed to provide clarity, confidence and practical advice for women in business.<\/p>\n

Finally, Business Victoria and the City of Greater Geelong will join forces in a free workshop for Starting Your Small Business on 14 November.<\/p>\n

This three-hour workshop, delivered by Business Victoria, is for small business owners and entrepreneurs who want to build a solid base for their new business.<\/p>\n

You will learn how to set up your business, pick and register the perfect business name, choose the right shop, office and online platform, along with the right insurance, and discover useful tips and resources.<\/p>\n

The City of Greater Geelong’s Environmental Health and Investment and Economy teams will also be on hand to help you gain a better understanding of council requirements including:<\/p>\n

Permits and zoning<\/p>\n

Home based business compliance guidelines, and<\/p>\n

Resources and supports available from the City of Greater Geelong.<\/p>\n
