{"id":122818,"date":"2025-10-23T14:23:23","date_gmt":"2025-10-23T03:23:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/?p=122818"},"modified":"2025-10-23T14:33:12","modified_gmt":"2025-10-23T03:33:12","slug":"stead-park-hockey-upgrade-to-bring-elite-sport-to-geelong","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/news\/stead-park-hockey-upgrade-to-bring-elite-sport-to-geelong\/","title":{"rendered":"Stead Park hockey upgrade to bring elite sport to Geelong"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-start=\"636\" data-end=\"761\">Stead Park in Corio is on track to become one of Victoria\u2019s premier hockey hubs, with a major redevelopment now underway.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"763\" data-end=\"969\">The multi-million-dollar project will deliver a new international-standard pitch and a two-storey pavilion designed to attract top-level competitions to the region while also benefiting the local community.<\/p>\n<p><center><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border: none; overflow: hidden;\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/video.php?height=476&amp;href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Freel%2F831220882734586%2F&amp;show_text=true&amp;width=267&amp;t=0\" width=\"267\" height=\"591\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe> <script async defer crossorigin=\"anonymous\" src=\"https:\/\/connect.facebook.net\/en_US\/sdk.js#xfbml=1&#038;version=v17.0\"><\/script><\/center><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"971\" data-end=\"1130\">Member for Lara Ella George said the state government\u2019s funding for the Stead Park and Torquay upgrades will create a legacy for generations of hockey players.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1132\" data-end=\"1276\">\u201cWe\u2019ll have an incredible new pitch for national and international games and a pavilion that every hockey player in Geelong deserves,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1278\" data-end=\"1418\">\u201cIt will overlook both pitches and meet international standards, opening the door for elite competitions and growing the game here at home.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1420\" data-end=\"1531\">Geelong mayor Stretch Kontelj said the redevelopment will position Stead Park as a top-tier sports destination.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1533\" data-end=\"1639\">\u201cThese will be the best hockey facilities in Victoria and the pinnacle for our sport in Geelong,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1641\" data-end=\"1789\">Hockey Geelong president Graeme Dent said the project will also help the club reconnect with the wider community after COVID-19 saw membership fall.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1791\" data-end=\"1884\">\u201cWe dropped from 1200 members to 650, but we\u2019re back up to 870 and aiming for more,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1886\" data-end=\"2029\">\u201cThis upgrade will encourage people who\u2019ve never played to give it a go. We\u2019re a family-oriented sport that welcomes all ages and backgrounds.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2031\" data-end=\"2217\">The new pavilion will feature modern change rooms, spectator seating, improved lighting, an electronic scoreboard and expanded parking.
