{"id":122957,"date":"2025-11-05T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-11-04T17:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/?p=122957"},"modified":"2025-10-29T18:03:26","modified_gmt":"2025-10-29T07:03:26","slug":"heritage-excellence-showcased-in-geelong","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/news\/heritage-excellence-showcased-in-geelong\/","title":{"rendered":"Heritage excellence showcased in Geelong"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>EXCELLENCE in the retention, restoration and reuse of heritage places has been celebrated at the Greater Geelong Heritage Awards.<\/p>\n<p>The achievements of both businesses and individuals were honoured at an awards ceremony at Wurriki Nyal in Geelong last week.<\/p>\n<p>A total of eight category winners were acknowledged for ensuring Geelong&#8217;s rich history remains an integral part of future growth and development. The Restoration of a Heritage Place was awarded to 164 Bellarine Street, Geelong, a Federation-style timber bakery.<\/p>\n<p>A 101-year-old brick shopfront at 66 Elizabeth Street, West Geelong, and The Glass House in North Geelong were awarded the Creative Reuse of a Heritage Place award PhD candidate Donya Masoomi Khameneh received the Next Generation Award for her research examining the evolution of heritage perception in Geelong&#8217;s wholesale landscape.<\/p>\n<p>Geoff Saunders was honoured with the Jennifer Bantow OAM Individual Award for his long and distinguished contribution to the creative and sensitive adaptation of Geelong&#8217;s heritage buildings. Awards were also presented for Sustainability and Greening of a Heritage Place, New Work in a Heritage Overlay, and Heritage Interpretation and Promotion.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 601px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2025\/11\/CrStory-JenniferBant_02404.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"601\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Councillor Rowan Story and Jennifer Bantow OAM presenting Geoff Saunders with his individual award.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Geelong mayor Stretch Kontelj said this year&#8217;s awards recognised exceptional projects spanning both commercial and residential places.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Every winner demonstrated remarkable craftsmanship, a strong commitment to sustainability, and an imaginative approach to conservation, restoration and adaptive reuse,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Through their work, they are not only preserving our rich history but also ensuring its enjoyment by future generations.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Geelong heritage advisory committee chair Cr Rowan Story said Geelong was fortunate to have such a range of heritage places.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was fantastic to see collaboration between builders, designers, tradespeople and architects demonstrated in exciting projects,&#8221; Cr Story said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;These awards show how many groups, businesses and individuals are passionate about preserving our region&#8217;s heritage.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>EXCELLENCE in the retention, restoration and reuse of heritage places has been celebrated at the Greater Geelong Heritage Awards.
