{"id":123047,"date":"2025-11-01T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-10-31T17:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/?p=123047"},"modified":"2025-10-29T21:51:07","modified_gmt":"2025-10-29T10:51:07","slug":"new-facility-to-massively-expand-freight-at-avalon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/news\/new-facility-to-massively-expand-freight-at-avalon\/","title":{"rendered":"New facility to massively expand freight at Avalon"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THE amount of freight passing through Melbourne Avalon Airport will jump up to tenfold through a new terminal now in operation.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2025\/11\/IMG_9582_20112.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The terminal is located in a hangar formerly used to service Qantas 747s.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The $8 million air freight terminal, located on the west side of the airport precinct in a hangar formerly used to service Qantas 747s, will allow Avalon to increase its annual cargo processing from 10,000 tonnes now to eventually 100,000 tonnes.<\/p>\n<p>The facility operates 24 hours a day and be equipped with advanced scanning technology, making it one of the first airports in Australia to comply with the new Border Force security screening standards, allowing arriving freight to be processed faster.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2025\/11\/IMG_9622_28799.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Victorian Minister for Industry and Advanced Manufacturing Colin Brooks and Avalon CEO Ari Suss next to the cold store at the terminal.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Already in use, the terminal has processed specialised cargo from the defence industry in the past few months, and will soon handle sets and equipment for the coming Lady Gaga concerts.<\/p>\n<p>Motorsport freight for major events such as MotoGP, Formula 1 and World Superbikes will also use the facility.<\/p>\n<p>Victorian Minister for for Industry and Advanced Manufacturing Colin Brooks officially opened the terminal on Monday this week, alongside Lara MP Ella George and Geelong MP Christine Couzens.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;[The terminal] is a massive investment in this airport, which is the beating part of the Avalon employment precinct, and the Avalon employment precinct is a critical part of our industrial growth in Victoria,&#8221; Mr Brooks said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2025\/11\/IMG_9645_53250.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">L-R: Victorian Minister for Industry and Advanced Manufacturing Colin Brooks, Lara MP Ella George, Avalon CEO Ari Suss and Geelong mayor Stretch Kontelj tour the facility.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;So this is a really important jobs announcement today.
