AS Geelong’s floating Christmas tree prepares to make its highly anticipated return, the City of Greater Geelong has launched its events program for the festive season.<\/p>\n

Running from November 22 to January 7, the six-week schedule features markets, music, sparkly displays, hands-on activities and plenty of entertainment for the kids.<\/p>\n

Mayor Stretch Kontelj said the season promised something for everyone.<\/p>\n

“From carols and lights to performances and projections, Christmas is a special occasion in Geelong,” he said.<\/p>\n

“It’s a time to come together, share joy and celebrate community.”<\/p>\n

The season will open on November 22 at Steampacket Gardens with two longstanding traditions: Denis Walter’s Carols by the Bay and the lighting of the floating Christmas tree.<\/p>\n

Christmas trees decorated by local primary school students will adorn Johnstone Park, businesses will dress their shopfronts with the spirit of the season for glory in the City’s window display competition, and Santa will take a ride on the Carousel at various times throughout December.<\/p>\n

In a new addition to this year’s lineup, choirs, musicians, dancers and street performers will also pop up at rotating locations in central Geelong every Friday, Saturday and Sunday between November 28 and December 14.<\/p>\n

Piano-accordionist and initiative ambassador, Lucy Riddett, said she was looking forward to bringing some magic to the heart of Geelong.<\/p>\n

“Geelong is such a vibrant place to be at Christmas time and I am so excited to take my music from the stage to the streets,” she said.<\/p>\n

“There will be plenty of song, dance and frivolity to add another dimension to the central Geelong experience.”<\/p>\n

Already a success after its first event, the new weekly Geelong City Market, held on Saturdays in Little Malop Street, will take on a festive feel as Christmas draws closer, City Hall will light up with projections from dusk to midnight, and the National Wool Museum will host drop-in family craft and homemade decoration workshops.<\/p>\n

Deputy mayor Ron Nelson encouraged residents and visitors to explore the city and enjoy the festivities.<\/p>\n

“This season is about connection and reflection, and our program has something for all ages and interests to enjoy,” he said.<\/p>\n

“Whether it’s catching a pop-up street show, perusing market stalls or riding the Carousel at night, there are many ways to get involved.”<\/p>\n
