COUNTRIES around the world will come together in the effort to eliminate gender-based violence.<\/p>\n

The 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence will run from November 25 \u2013 International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women \u2013 until December 10.<\/p>\n

As part of the international movement, events will also take place around Geelong, with the support of the City.<\/p>\n

Chair of the City of Greater Geelong council’s women and community life portfolio, Cr Melissa Cadwell, said the annual campaign was a powerful reminder of everyone’s role in creating a safer, more equal society.<\/p>\n

“We all need to challenge harmful attitudes in our workplaces, homes, sports clubs, community groups and relationships,” Cr Caldwell said. “This includes simple actions like calling out jokes that put women down, to help create a culture where women are respected.”<\/p>\n

Geelong events will kick off on November 23 with the Zonta Club’s annual launch on the Waterfront.<\/p>\n

Beginning at 9am, the group will make their way from the Eastern Beach swimming pool to Fairnie Park and participants will hear from Respect Victoria’s Jacquie O’Brien.<\/p>\n

Respect 2040 will hold a series of webinars covering the impact of disasters, engaging men, boys and community-driven change, beginning on Wednesday, November 26.<\/p>\n

The City will present the Barwon Respect Cup in this year’s competition, which brings year 9 and 10 students together for a game of netball and to learn about healthy and negative relationships, help-seeking behaviours and bystander intervention.<\/p>\n

The Sexual Assault & Family Violence Centre will host Together We Can on December 2, a collective conversation towards a community free from gendered violence.<\/p>\n

“We’re inviting everyone in Greater Geelong to get involved over the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence, whether by attending events, learning about respectful relationships or starting a conversation,” Geelong mayor Stretch Kontelj said.<\/p>\n

“Council is proud to stand alongside local organisations and residents to raise awareness, promote respect and drive change.”<\/p>\n
