GEELONG Animal Welfare Society (GAWS) is calling on the community to give animals a second chance at life this festive season with its Christmas Appeal.<\/p>\n

All funds raised throughout the appeal will go towards caring for the animals at GAWS and helping the organisation purchase essential items.<\/p>\n

GAWS chief executive officer Helen Cocks said the Christmas Appeal is one of the most important fundraisers of the year.<\/p>\n

“Every dollar helps provide lifesaving veterinary care, safe shelter, nutritious food and the chance for every animal to find a loving home,” Ms Cocks said. “People who donate are making a tangible, immediate difference to animals who cannot help themselves.”<\/p>\n

During the past two years, more than 3,000 animals have received care at GAWS with each animal undergoing veterinary attention, food, shelter, care and enrichment.<\/p>\n

As a non-government-funded organisation, GAWS relies heavily on the generosity of the community to ensure the animals are well looked after. It is aiming to raise $50,000 through this year’s appeal.<\/p>\n

“For many animals, the support received through the Christmas Appeal is the difference between homelessness and a loving forever home,” Ms Cocks said.<\/p>\n

“This year, supporters have the opportunity to contribute to specific items on our wishlist \u2013 from surgery lights to treats, cat caves to foster care packs \u2013 every donation helps us get closer to purchasing an item.”<\/p>\n

Donations will also help manage the expected influx of surrenders that takes place around Christmas.<\/p>\n

This period is often one of the busiest for GAWS, with adoptions often increasing before Christmas, along with the number of surrenders.<\/p>\n
