RACV says it has responded to more than 1,100 lockout emergencies across Victoria since January, and is urging drivers to keep their keys close and stay alert this summer.<\/p>\n

The Bureau of Meteorology’s long range forecast for December to February is predicting above-average temperatures for summer, and RACV is reminding parents, carers and pet owners that it is never safe to leave a child or animal unattended in a vehicle.<\/p>\n

Cabin temperatures can rise rapidly, often exceeding 70C within minutes when the outside temperature is 30C, putting children and animals at immediate risk of heat stress, dehydration and heatstroke.<\/p>\n

According to Kidsafe Victoria, more than 5,000 children are rescued after being left unattended in a car every year across Australia.<\/p>\n

RACV general manager of automotive services, Makarla Cole, said many of the lockout cases attended by RACV patrols were avoidable.<\/p>\n

“Any call involving children or pets in danger is treated as top priority by RACV Emergency Roadside Assistance. RACV will respond as fast as possible, regardless of whether you’re a member or not.<\/p>\n

“Most incidents occur when keys are left in reach, handed to a child, or accidentally pressed by a pet. Simple precautions can prevent a dangerous and distressing situation.<\/p>\n

“If the situation is life threatening, please call 000 immediately.”<\/p>\n

As of November 30, RACV Emergency Roadside Assist has rescued 514 children and 595 animals from locked vehicles.<\/p>\n

RACV urges motorists travelling with children or pets to:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Open windows before placing children or pets inside to prevent auto-locking<\/p>\n

Keep keys on their person using a clip or lanyard<\/p>\n

Avoid giving keys to children as a toy or distraction<\/p>\n

Minimise distractions when loading the car, and<\/p>\n

Always check the back seat before locking the vehicle.<\/p>\n

If a child or pet is accidentally locked in the car:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Stay calm, but act fast<\/p>\n

For life-threatening situations, phone Triple Zero (000) immediately, and<\/p>\n

Phone 13 11 11<\/a> for RACV Emergency Roadside Assistance.<\/p>\n
