THERE’S something special about summer across the Surf Coast Shire, as the events calendar heats up with an incredible range of activities.<\/p>\n

Markets, parkruns, the Nightjar Festival Series, concerts, and even sheep dog trials, the Surf Coast Events website is overflowing with ways to get out and about from the hinterland to the coast.<\/p>\n

Surf Life Saving Club-run events have become an annual tradition for locals and visitors, attracting thousands of participants to swim and run.<\/p>\n

Anglesea Surf Life Saving Club facilities coordinator, Peter Williams, highlighted the buzzing atmosphere in the warmer months.<\/p>\n

“The beach is packed, we’ve got patrollers, there’s a lot of people around, and there’s a buzz around the place,” he said.<\/p>\n

This year marks the 30th edition of the Rock2Ramp Ocean Swim, which will welcome about 1,000 participants to Point Roadknight on December 28.<\/p>\n

“People come from everywhere: swim clubs from Melbourne and the other side of the bay, and there’s a good mix of locals and holidaymakers,” Williams said.<\/p>\n

“It’s always been a very safe and happy swim.<\/p>\n

“It’s also an important fundraiser for the club and contributes to the water safety work we do.”<\/p>\n

Other popular events include the Anglesea Roo Run (December 27), Danger Ocean Swim Series in Torquay (January 3), Tim Gates Classic in Fairhaven (January 4), and the Mountain to Surf Run (January 9) and Pier to Pub (January 10) in Lorne.<\/p>\n

Councillor Joel Grist said one of the council’s goals was to welcome tourism that supports local communities and delivers more consistent economic and social benefits year-round.<\/p>\n

“An event like the Pier to Pub has established itself as an iconic event that transforms Lorne,” Cr Grist said.<\/p>\n

“We love to see people make a weekend of it as they book accommodation and enjoy hospitality venues. Historically, the event has generated about $4.5 million of economic value to the local community.”<\/p>\n

Cr Grist encouraged people to visit the Surf Coast Events website and save it to their favourites.<\/p>\n

“Whether you live on the coast or in the hinterland, we’re spoilt for choice when it comes to events across the shire,” he said.<\/p>\n

“Personally, I love heading along to the Wincheslea Community Market and also watching local parkruns continue to build.”<\/p>\n

An upcoming major event is the Mapei Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race from January 28 to February 1.<\/p>\n

“I’m excited to jump on my bike for another People’s Ride,” Cr Grist said.<\/p>\n

“I encourage people to put January 28 and 29 in the diary for the Surf Coast Classic races, to watch the world’s best cyclists in our backyard.<\/p>\n
