AS SUMMER arrives and people flock to the water, lifesavers and lifeguards are returning to beaches and pools across the state.<\/p>\n

More than 45,000 lifesavers and lifeguards will patrol Victorian beaches this season, with millions of visits expected over the warmer months.<\/p>\n

Throughout the busy period, Life Saving Victoria (LSV) is urging the community to keep water safety front of mind and take simple steps to look after themselves and others.<\/p>\n

“We head into the summer season following the worst spate of spring drownings in nearly a quarter of a century,” an LSV spokesperson said.<\/p>\n

“A total of 12 fatal drownings have been recorded since spring began in September, the highest seasonal drowning number since 2001.”<\/p>\n

The 2024\u201325 Drowning Report shows drowning deaths among 15- to 24-year-olds were 27 per cent above the 10-year average, while people aged 65 and over recorded the highest drowning rate of any age group.<\/p>\n

Last summer, LSV lifesavers and lifeguards carried out more than 1,000 rescues, responded to almost 1,600 major first aid incidents and undertook close to 365,000 preventative actions.<\/p>\n

“Our lifesavers do an incredible job to keep Victorians safe around the water \u2013 but we need everyone to do their part,” Minister for Emergency Services, Vicki Ward, said.<\/p>\n

“It’s vital that Victorians take water safety seriously \u2013 swim between the flags, never swim alone and always wear a lifejacket when boating or fishing.”<\/p>\n

LSV is also warning people to take care to avoid unintentional entry into water, including slips, trips and falls.<\/p>\n

“These have been a key factor in many recent drowning incidents,” the LSV spokesperson said.<\/p>\n

“Be aware of slippery or unstable surfaces, be careful around areas like coastal rock platforms and riverbanks, read safety signs and keep a safe distance.<\/p>\n

“It’s also important to check for side effects of prescription medication that may affect your balance and judgement.”<\/p>\n

Rip currents remain the number one hazard on Australian beaches, with two in three people who believe they can identify a rip unable to do so.<\/p>\n

Swimming in a public pool is a safer alternative for those who are less confident in the water, with lifeguards on duty at all times.<\/p>\n
