CONSTRUCTION on a major upgrade at one of Geelong\u2019s busiest intersections is now under way.<\/p>\n

Upgrades to the Geelong-Portarlington Road and Wilsons Road intersection in Newcomb will deliver new traffic signals, dedicated turning lanes and a pedestrian footpath connecting to the bus stop.<\/p>\n

The $6.5 million project is jointly funded by the federal and Victorian governments, with each contributing $3.25 million.<\/p>\n

Geelong-Portarlington Road is a four-lane, dual carriageway connecting Geelong with the coastal town of Portarlington on the Bellarine Peninsula.<\/p>\n

The intersection is in a busy residential area and experiences significant seasonal holiday traffic.<\/p>\n

Construction will take about six months.<\/p>\n

Crews will be on site from Monday to Friday. Lane closures and a 40kmh per hour speed limit will be in place to keep workers and road users safe.<\/p>\n

Local federal and state MPs welcomed the start of works.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s great to see construction under way on this project, ensuring this busy intersection can better support current and future traffic demands while improving safety,\u201d Corio federal member Richard Marles said.<\/p>\n

Geelong MP Chris Couzens added: \u201cWhether you’re heading to work or school, this intersection will soon be easier to navigate and is part of our broader commitment to deliver vital safety upgrades across Victoria.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bellarine MP Alison Marchant said the upgrade was about making journeys safer for locals and visitors with dedicated turning lanes, new traffic signals, and better pedestrian access.<\/p>\n
