MAJOR events held across Greater Geelong in 2024-25 delivered an economic contribution of $93 million, according to figures from the City of Greater Geelong.<\/p>\n
Twelve major events received support through the Geelong Major Events (GME) program, attracting more than 499,000 participants and spectators. More than 90 per cent of attendance opportunities were free for the public, according to the city.<\/p>\n
The city’s $1.5 million investment returned an estimated $56 for every dollar spent.<\/p>\n
Events contributing to the result included the Avalon Australian International Airshow, Festival of Sails and the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race.<\/p>\n
The impressive boost reinforces Geelong’s reputation for hosting world-class sporting and entertainment events.<\/p>\n
The 2024-25 financial year marked the first year of the five-year GME Strategy, which outlines how the council intends to guide sponsorships and support events across the region.<\/p>\n
Mayor Stretch Kontelj said the figures demonstrated the ongoing impact of major events on Geelong.<\/p>\n
“Our city is standing tall as a destination for world-class events,” he said. “We can be proud of the economic benefits and the opportunities these events bring our community.<\/p>\n
“The GME committee plays a vital role in attracting and supporting major events, and with the launch of our GME strategy, we look forward to delivering even greater benefits for the region.”<\/p>\n
GME committee chair, Cr Andrew Katos, said the outcome reflected the efforts of local organisers and volunteers.<\/p>\n
“This success is thanks to the hard work of venues, organisers, volunteers and the broader Geelong community,” he said.<\/p>\n
