{"id":125399,"date":"2026-01-01T04:00:36","date_gmt":"2025-12-31T17:00:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/?p=125399"},"modified":"2025-12-19T10:14:17","modified_gmt":"2025-12-18T23:14:17","slug":"free-parking-drives-422000-sessions-in-central-geelong","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/news\/free-parking-drives-422000-sessions-in-central-geelong\/","title":{"rendered":"Free parking drives 422,000 sessions in central Geelong"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>THE City of Greater Geelong is touting the success of its <a href=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/central-geelong-free-parking-success\">central Geelong free parking<\/a> initiative in central Geelong over the past five months, with more than 422,000 2P parking sessions being used.<\/p>\n<p>The city is trying to spur the revitalisation of central Geelong by making it easier for locals and visitors to support businesses in the CBD.<\/p>\n<p>Drivers need to follow three steps to get two hours of free parking:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Find a 2P parking bay<\/li>\n<li>Start a free session on the meter or via the <a href=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/easypark-app-parking-geelong\">EasyPark app<\/a>, and<\/li>\n<li>Leave the bay when your time is up.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>To support the community to take full advantage of this free scheme, the city has released a new map of central Geelong that shows where all 1,000 2P bays can be found.<\/p>\n<p>Each vehicle is eligible for one free two-hour parking session per day.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is fantastic to see in our data that from July 14 until the end of November, residents and visitors had used 422,388 free 2P parking sessions while visiting central Geelong,\u201d Geelong mayor, <a href=\"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/geelong-mayor-stretch-kontelj-supports-local-initiatives\">Geelong mayor Stretch Kontelj<\/a>, said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_125421\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-125421\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-125421\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2026\/01\/2P-free-map.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"380\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2026\/01\/2P-free-map.jpg 600w, https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2026\/01\/2P-free-map-300x190.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-125421\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A map showing the free 2P parking areas (highlighted in green) in central Geelong.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>But, he said, more people could be making the most of the free initiative as they shop, dine, run errands, meet with friends or visit a gallery.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDon\u2019t forget, \u2018Find 2P and park free\u2019 when you\u2019re in central Geelong,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Chair of the council\u2019s finance portfolio, Cr Andrew Katos, said drivers were eligible for two hours free parking in 2P zones but not in 15-minute, 1P, 4P or all-day bays.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCheck out our handy new map that highlights where to find the thousand 2P bays in central Geelong,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOnce you find a 2P bay, you won\u2019t be charged for parking when you start a session at the meter or on the EasyPark app.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKeep in mind that parking across the region is free in the evenings and on weekends, however time limits still apply.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To see the map, head to <a href=\"http:\/\/geelong.link\/FreeParking\">geelong.link\/FreeParking<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>THE City of Greater Geelong is touting the success of its central Geelong free parking initiative in central Geelong over the past five months, with more than 422,000 2P parking sessions being used.
