AS WE head into 2026, I’m looking forward to the completion of several local Council projects that will benefit residents in the eastern suburbs and the broader Geelong community.<\/p>\n
Several local sporting infrastructure projects will have our clubs kicking goals \u2013 or shooting hoops, running laps, or smashing personal bests \u2013 in 2026.<\/p>\n
Families are already enjoying recent works at Aldershot Reserve, with the new playground fast becoming a popular play space for children in St Albans Park.<\/p>\n
The transformation we’ve seen at the reserve is nothing short of remarkable, and I encourage the local community to get down there and check it out.<\/p>\n
The next phase of the Aldershot Reserve master plan is now underway, with construction of an outdoor fitness area and accessible public toilets set to be complete midway through the year.<\/p>\n
The entire scope of works, including procurement of an asphalt pump track and landscaping works, will be completed next year.<\/p>\n
Grinter Reserve sports clubs will have the chance to play later into the evening following the recent completion of $600,000 sports lighting upgrades.<\/p>\n
With federal government funding, Council is delivering new goal netting on oval 1, new LED sports lighting on oval 2 and upgraded LED lighting on the netball courts.<\/p>\n
The original scope of works has been completed, with residual funding approved for the additional upgrades to oval 2. These works delivered goal netting on the northern end of the oval, as well as goal post realignment.<\/p>\n
The BMX track at Grinter Reserve won’t be left in the dark \u2013 Council is delivering track lighting through the City’s Community Infrastructure Grants program, with construction nearing completion.<\/p>\n
At Thomson Recreation Reserve, upgrades to the netball courts will mean players can benefit from Netball Victoria-compliant facilities, on track to be completed in time for the 2026 season.<\/p>\n
The reserve will also receive upgrades to the cricket training facility, with natural turf and synthetic lanes constructed to Cricket Australia facility standards, and new connecting footpaths and car park modifications for the expanded infrastructure.<\/p>\n
On completion of these upgrades, we are installing new playground equipment to replace the previous playground, expected to commence in early 2026.<\/p>\n
So, whether you’re bowling, batting or playing on the wing, or watching your kids or grandkids enjoy new playground, there will be lots to cheer about at Thomson this year.<\/p>\n
Over at John Landy Athletics Field, Geelong’s premier athletics venue is receiving significant upgrades to its pavilion, with works already underway.<\/p>\n
The new two-storey pavilion will provide Geelong Little Athletics, Geelong Athletics and Barwon Sports Academy a modern home, bringing trackside facilities up to speed with the upgraded $1.5 million running track delivered by the City in 2024.<\/p>\n
The pavilion upgrade is supported by a $5 million contribution from the state government, matched by City of Greater Geelong.<\/p>\n
Once complete, the new pavilion will house a competition office, athlete change rooms, kiosk, social space, meeting room as well as multipurpose room.<\/p>\n
These projects are about so much more than new buildings and fresh turf.<\/p>\n
Sport brings our community together, and in the Cheetham ward, these upgrades will support participation, social connection and our grassroots clubs for years to come.<\/p>\n
By getting this infrastructure right in 2026, we’re setting up a legacy for the future. It’s about making sure the next generation of local legends have the best possible start, regardless of their sport or ability.<\/p>\n
I can’t wait to see our local players and families making the most of these new facilities as they come to fruition throughout the year.<\/p>\n
