Spin it!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Tell us how you got into the coffee industry and where your love for it came from?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I always had a love for coffee and especially when backpacking overseas in my 20s. I enjoyed checking out cool cafes and the way they make coffee differently in other countries. I also grew up working in a lot of hospitality venues and my family ran a pub in Geelong for over 60 years, so I think there&#8217;s hospitality in the blood!<\/p>\n<p>I worked as a civil\/structural engineer for 10 years (both here and over in London) before making the leap to follow my passion for coffee. I guess I love how coffee brings people together and also how it can transport you to other places by sparking nice memories.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What inspired you to open Ocean Grind?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I was backpacking in Central and South America in 2006 and I was in a surf town in Nicaragua, San Juan del Sur, where there was a cafe that was roasting beans with a popcorn maker. I was really intrigued and had a bit of a light bulb moment: I knew I had to try this when I got home.<\/p>\n<p>I quickly learnt a lot about roasting and how important bean freshness is. I did try roasting with a $15 popcorn maker from Kmart. It turned the beans brown but tasted terrible! I did a short roasting course in Melbourne and bought a little electric roaster to tinker with.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile I worked on my business plan. I was wanting to bring some purpose with my brand, combining my passion for both coffee and the ocean\/environment, hence Ocean Grind was born.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/01\/im11120-scaled_61318.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>How has the business grown<\/strong><strong> over time?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I invested in a 5kg commercial roaster that got installed in our garage in Jan Juc. I was still working full-time as an engineering project manager and roasting at night. I started delivering bags of coffee to people&#8217;s letter boxes and then started doing a basic coffee cart at the Torquay Farmer&#8217;s Market every Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>In 2013, I quit my engineering work to pursue my coffee business 100 per cent and built a retro coffee caravan to do the markets and other events.<\/p>\n<p>I started to get my coffee in a few shops and small cafes and set up the roastery\/cafe in the West Coast Business Park at the start of 2016. Our cafe has grown over the years and we are supplying more and more cafes\/shops and sending beans to homes all around the country via our online store.<\/p>\n<p><strong>You celebrated ten years in 2023. To what do you credit your success?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I do feel proud and also very grateful. Product is obviously key and it takes a lot of persistence and also having a clear vision of where you want things to get to.<\/p>\n<p>Most of all it&#8217;s about the people around you: my very supportive family, the incredible staff I&#8217;ve had over the years, the wonderful customers who visited us at the markets or out at the industrial estate. And there&#8217;s so many others that have helped along the way: industry colleagues, graphic designers, tradies and my friends.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/01\/IMG_7746-scaled_61353.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"380\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>What are the business&#8217;s goals for the next ten years?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We have just released our new logo and are working on some new packaging in the new year. We will also be offering new, improved home barista training classes. Longer term we hope to work with more cafes near and far, and also develop more direct relationships with coffee farmers.<\/p>\n<p>We will also continue to find ways to make our business as environmentally sustainable as possible.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What&#8217;s good about where we live?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Our beaches and surf breaks are world-class and I love how they feel different as the seasons change. We&#8217;ve also got the Otways on our doorstep with great walks and waterfalls. The community is so supportive and filled with creative people who lift each other up.<\/p>\n<p>RAPID RIV:<\/p>\n<p><strong>I&#8217;m coming over for dinner, what are you cooking?<\/strong> Thai red chicken curry<\/p>\n<p><strong>Favourite movie?<\/strong> <em>Good Will Hunting.<\/em> But I&#8217;m an 80s kid so have to mention the <em>Star Wars, Indiana Jones <\/em>and<em> Back to the Future<\/em> trilogies.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Pump up song to get you going in the morning?<\/strong> <em>Even Flow <\/em>by Pearl Jam<\/p>\n<p><strong>Best coffee you&#8217;ve tasted?<\/strong> Hard to pinpoint, but having coffee on a farm in the Colombian mountains with the farmer and his family was an amazing experience.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1 million dollars, what do you do with it?<\/strong> Invest in the business and the causes we get behind. But also do more travel with the family.
