GEELONG Venom have teamed up with the Transport Accident Commission (TAC) in a new initiative uniting Victorian sporting clubs for the cause of road safety.<\/p>\n

The Venom are one of more than 1,700 clubs that will participate in Road Safety Rounds, aimed at raising awareness around safer driving behaviours.<\/p>\n

In their WNBL home clash against Bendigo on January 30, all the club’s players and officials will wear blue armbands to “band together” in promoting road safety and honour those impacted by road trauma.<\/p>\n

Geelong’s partnership with the TAC leverages the influence of both elite and community sport to drive change and reduce road death and injury tolls.<\/p>\n

On top of the Road Safety Round later this month, the initiative will leverage Venom stars as role models to engage junior participants and educate the wider basketball community to promote safe driving.<\/p>\n

Venom chief executive officer Mark Neeld stressed the power of sport in influencing behaviour and road safety.<\/p>\n

“Basketball is deeply embedded in the Geelong community, and our players, families and supporters are on the road constantly – often late at night and over long distances.<\/p>\n

“By engaging our junior players, families and clubs, and having our WNBL athletes lead by example, we can help build a culture where road safety is front of mind.<\/p>\n

“If sport can help prevent even one tragedy, then this partnership will have made a meaningful difference.”<\/p>\n
