Photo: SUPPLIED<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>As clean-up efforts continue, questions have been raised about the timing and adequacy of warnings issued ahead of the rapidly escalating flood event.<\/p>\n<p>Fronting the media on Friday, emergency management commissioner Tim Wiebusch said the warnings had been \u201cas timely as can be\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe do believe that the warnings were adequate for what was needed at that point in time and were as timely as can be,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The Bureau of Meteorology issued a severe thunderstorm warning at 11.57am on Thursday, which was upgraded to include life-threatening flash flooding at 12.40pm. A Watch and Act warning followed at 12.58pm.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_178632\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-178632\" style=\"width: 640px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-178632 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/01\/shared-image-1024x768.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-178632\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Residents and crews continue the clean-up across Lorne and Wye River, assessing damage left behind after Thursday\u2019s sudden flooding. Photo: SURF COAST SHIRE<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Emergency alerts were also sent to more than 10,000 mobile phones, Wiebusch said.<\/p>\n<p>The first triple-zero call linked to flooding at a Wye River holiday park was received at 1.08pm, followed by another at 1.20pm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe understand the water came up very quickly and that is the case of flash flooding,\u201d Wiebusch said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen we see severe thunderstorms, they can appear and be in the landscape within 20 to 30 minutes without a lot of time to provide warnings.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut in this case, thunderstorm warnings had been out for just over an hour before we started to see some of those impacts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_178634\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-178634\" style=\"width: 631px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-178634\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/01\/615419127_27035852926003135_6589346203226720833_n-1024x563.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"631\" height=\"347\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-178634\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Residents and crews continue the clean-up across Lorne and Wye River, assessing damage left behind after Thursday\u2019s sudden flooding. Photo: SUPPLIED<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><strong>Risk period just beginning<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>The Bureau of Meteorology\u2019s Diane Eadie on Friday said there was the potential for severe thunderstorms to develop across western parts of Victoria on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>Authorities are also anticipating a renewed period of heightened fire danger over the Australia Day long weekend, with Friday and Saturday expected to be the peak of the next fire period.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking from the State Control Centre on Friday, emergency management commissioner Tim Wiebusch warned the risk period has only just begun.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re still very early in our summer season, and the risk of fires, flash flooding [and] storms will be with us for many more weeks yet as we go through the coming months,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe need the community to remain alert to conditions.
