{"id":126297,"date":"2026-01-26T12:52:50","date_gmt":"2026-01-26T01:52:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/news\/communities-prepare-to-evacuate-from-otways-fire\/"},"modified":"2026-01-26T12:52:50","modified_gmt":"2026-01-26T01:52:50","slug":"communities-prepare-to-evacuate-from-otways-fire","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/news\/communities-prepare-to-evacuate-from-otways-fire\/","title":{"rendered":"Communities prepare to evacuate from Otways fire"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>SURF Coast and Otways residents from as far east as Anglesea are being urged to keep a very close eye on conditions tomorrow (Tuesday, January 27) as a severe to extreme heatwave peaking across Victoria combines with an uncontrolled bushfire in the Otways.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier today (Monday, January 26), a &#8220;Watch and Act &#8211; Prepare to Evacuate&#8221; alert was issued for many communities to the east of the Carlisle River fire, strongly recommending they prepare to evacuate before sunset today.<\/p>\n<p>They include Barongarook, Barongarook West, Beech Forest, Carlisle River, Coram, Elliminyt, Gellibrand, Gerangamete, Irrewillipe, Irrewillipe East, Kawarren, Larpent, Lovat, Tulloh, Wimba, Yeo Beech Forest, Carlisle River, Charleys Creek, Dinmont, Ferguson, Kincaid, Pile Siding, Weeaproinah, Wyelangta, Barongarook, Barwon Downs, Benwerrin, Forrest, Gerangamete, Kawarren, Murroon, Yaugher, Yeodene, Barramunga, Barwon Downs, Mount Sabine, Olangolah East, Tanybryn and Upper Gellibrand.<\/p>\n<p>Police and SES are conducting door-knocking in the area, but they cannot reach every property.<\/p>\n<p>People evacuating from these areas should pack:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Cash<\/li>\n<li>Clothing for three days<\/li>\n<li>Medicine for three days<\/li>\n<li>Phone and chargers<\/li>\n<li>Toiletries<\/li>\n<li>Important documents<\/li>\n<li>Momentos and photos<\/li>\n<li>Pet essentials, including leash and carriers.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If possible, make sure your neighbours are aware of the situation and check if they need help, and check the VicRoads website for road closures.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_179173\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-179173\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-179173\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/01\/evac-map.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"380\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-179173\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">This map on the VicEmergency website shows the extent of the areas either preparing to evacuate or monitoring conditions. Don\u2019t wait to be told when to leave.<\/p>\n<p>Relief centres have been established at:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Colac Showgrounds &#8211; enter via Bruce Street &#8211; this is the only centre that you can take large domestic animals<\/li>\n<li>Colac Blue Water Fitness 118-134 Hearn Street, and<\/li>\n<li>Grovedale Community Hub. 45-47 Heyers Road.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>A &#8220;Watch and Act &#8211; Monitor Conditions as They Are Changing&#8221; alert has also been issued for a ring of towns to the north, east and south of the &#8220;Prepare to Evacuate&#8221; area, including Colac, Birregurra, Deans Marsh, Lavers Hill, Wye River, Kennett River, Lorne, Fairhaven, Aireys Inlet, the western side of Anglesea and Wensleydale.<\/p>\n<p>People in these communities should monitor changes to the situation. Increased wind speed, change in wind direction, smoke or poor visibility can indicate the situation is changing.<\/p>\n<p>Enact your fire survival plan. If you do not have a plan, decide what you will do if the situation changes.<\/p>\n<p>If you have time, check your neighbours to see if they are monitoring conditions.<\/p>\n<p>Country Fire Association chief Jason Heffernan said the Carlisle River fire would not be controlled ahead of the heatwave.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s not contained and will not be contained before tomorrow&#8217;s weather comes in,&#8221; he told ABC News Breakfast today.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Conditions will be very challenging.
