GEELONG City Market has fast become part of the weekend routine for many locals, and it’s a welcome, vibrant addition to our CBD.<\/p>\n

Every Saturday, thousands of marketgoers descend upon Little Malop central to shop, catch up with friends and take in the colourful atmosphere showcasing our local makers and creators.<\/p>\n

In its infancy, this market has already succeeded in its vision to celebrate local creativity, sustainability and community connection. It is a holistic produce, food and drink market that represents and promotes locality, quality, authenticity and excellence.<\/p>\n

Revitalising central Geelong has been a key focus for my term as mayor and I have always seen this market as a major step in enhancing an underutilised area of central Geelong, while showcasing the breadth of talented producers in our region.<\/p>\n

Every week, up to 8,000 residents and visitors peruse the offerings on Little Malop, a public space that is again realising its potential as a colourful gathering place for our community.<\/p>\n

Importantly, these events have revitalised Little Malop central, now a bustling piazza attracting shoppers between Moorabool and Yarra Streets.<\/p>\n

Early community feedback on the market has reflected my enthusiasm, and it is clearly already becoming a much\u2013loved part of our events calendar.<\/p>\n

The City surveyed shoppers at the market last year, with results indicating that the event was successful in its efforts to draw people into central Geelong.<\/p>\n

An impressive 77 per cent of shoppers attended specifically to shop at the market, with more than half also intending to spend money elsewhere in the CBD during their trip \u2013 a valuable boost to traders.<\/p>\n

They had a fantastic time too! Ninety-five per cent of those surveyed were either satisfied or very satisfied with the variety of stalls, atmosphere and environment.<\/p>\n

All those surveyed said they intended to return in future.<\/p>\n

Simon Toohey and Kieran Blood from Barwon Events have been terrific stewards of the market, combining their shared experience in cooking and event management to produce something truly extraordinary.<\/p>\n

Their ability to curate a robust roster of rotating stallholders keeps the market’s offerings fresh, enticing people back week after week.<\/p>\n

I’ve particularly enjoyed seeing crowds gather to watch Simon’s cooking demonstrations where he brings the magic of his TV show “Freshly Picked” right to Little Malop Street.<\/p>\n

Through ingenious collaborations with stallholders, he demonstrates how to turn market-fresh finds into incredible meals at home.<\/p>\n

It’s a true celebration of seasonal cooking, our local producers and, of course, plenty of bold flavour.<\/p>\n

To ensure the market continues to inspire and delight, the City is seeking further community feedback through the Geelong City Market Survey.<\/p>\n
