THE City of Greater Geelong is moving to expand a successful Geelong Botanic Gardens education program to more schools and community groups, following strong outcomes from a pilot with Whittington Primary School.<\/p>\n
The expansion will build on a hands-on program delivered last year at the gardens, which introduced primary students to healthy living, food value and sustainable choices through outdoor, place-based learning.<\/p>\n
Whittington Primary School’s year 3 and 4 students took part in the program, helping to care for and maintain sections of the vegetable garden while developing practical skills and environmental awareness.<\/p>\n
Teachers reported higher attendance on program days, with the interactive, outdoor format proving a strong motivator for students to come to school.<\/p>\n
The initiative provided Whittington Primary School, a low socio-economic index school, with improved access to food literacy and sustainability education, while fostering a sense of ownership and belonging.<\/p>\n
Geelong mayor Stretch Kontelj said the program highlighted the power of real-world learning.<\/p>\n
“The students’ enthusiasm shows just how powerful real-world, place-based learning can be in motivating young people to look after their health and the environment,” he said.<\/p>\n
“Programs like this help our youngest residents build practical skills, confidence and a stronger sense of connection to their community.”<\/p>\n
Cheetham ward councillor Melissa Cadwell said the experience delivered long-term benefits for young people.<\/p>\n
“This is a fantastic opportunity for local students to get out of the classroom, connect with nature and learn how to care for it,” she said.<\/p>\n
