THE dominant season of Geelong Venom’s Mackenzie Holmes<\/a> has been recognised by the WNBL, with the league naming her to the All-WNBL First Team.<\/p>\n

The US import was the league’s second-highest scorer in 2025\/26, averaging 21.9 points and 9.61 rebounds per game to earn herself a spot on the shortlist for the league MVP, awarded yesterday (Monday, February 9).<\/p>\n

In a statement on its website, the WNBL said the All-WNBL First Teams celebrate the five athletes who set the benchmark for excellence throughout the season, showcasing elite skill, consistency, professionalism, and influence on team success.<\/p>\n

“Selection to an All-WNBL Team represents recognition as the competition\u2019s very best performers.<\/p>\n

“Across a highly competitive season, the players named to the First and Second Teams distinguished themselves through match-winning performances, leadership, and the ability to deliver at the highest-level week after week.”<\/p>\n

This year’s other All-WNBL First Team members were Isobel Borlase (Bendigo Spirit), Anneli Maley (Perth Lynx), Ally Wilson (Perth Lynx) and Courtney Woods (Townsville Fire).<\/p>\n

Venom co-captain Jaz Shelley paired her leading point guard role with relentless efforts on the defensive end, averaging 2.6 steals per game and shutting down some of the league\u2019s best players. She was one of seven players in the running for the Defensive Player of the Year award.<\/p>\n

Lilly Rotunno was a mainstay in her side\u2019s starting lineup for most of the year and a finalist for the Breakout Player of the Year award.<\/p>\n

Mackenzie Clinch Hoycard was finalist for the Sixth Woman of the Year award, while outgoing head coach Chris Lucas was a nominee for Coach of the Year.<\/p>\n

As their 2025\/26 WNBL season came to a close, the Geelong Venom will be left pondering what could have been after a tumultuous campaign.<\/p>\n

In their second season in the league and first in the blue Venom kits, Geelong impressed in their last month to finish in sixth position on the ladder (7-16), but spent a large majority sitting last<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Venom were ravaged by injury at various points across the season – star US import Alissa Pili went down with a significant ankle injury minutes into their opening clash, ruling her out until late December, while guard Gemma Potter ruptured her ACL in Round 6 to put her out for the season.<\/p>\n

Marquee recruit Shyla Heal also didn\u2019t feature until November as she recovered from a knee injury.<\/p>\n

The bad luck led Geelong to experience much inconsistency with lineups and matchups, which saw them endure nine straight losses<\/a> through the middle part of the season.<\/p>\n

But as injuries and absences began to clear, they were able to finish their campaign strongly, winning four of their last seven clashes.<\/p>\n
