The site was buried under knee-high sludge and debris that required heavy machinery to remove.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was really a big challenge, but we were able to surpass that,&#8221; Nunez said. &#8220;We are really excited to reopen\u2026and we look forward to welcoming back the familiar faces and the new incoming guests.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>There were more than 300 guests staying at the caravan park last month when 180mm of rain fell on the township in just six hours.<\/p>\n<p>Warnings escalated rapidly and the low-lying campground was quickly inundated with floodwaters.<\/p>\n<p>Nunez had been monitoring the rainfall readings through the morning and managed to evacuate the site&#8217;s riverside campers to higher ground before the deluge hit.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_180594\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-180594\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-180594\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/02\/616609167_9371618122_04324-1-1024x738.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"432\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-180594\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Cumberland River Holiday Park was among the local business hardest hit by the floods. Photo: Supplied<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The family has spent the last three weeks living in one of the cabins at the campgrounds that was unaffected by the flood. It has made for a challenging start to the school year for Nunez&#8217;s children who are both under the age of six.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;As they say, this is not survival of the fittest, this is survival of the most adaptable,&#8221; Nunez said. &#8220;We are flexible and adaptable to any situation.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In every crisis, there&#8217;s an opportunity. Photo: Supplied<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They took care of us \u2013 everything \u2013 from the new bags, the school supplies, even the food.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Several businesses across Lorne are still feeling the impacts of what has been a horror start to the year, with many reporting a drop in revenue during what is an important tourism season for the township.<\/p>\n<p>But Nunez is optimistic about the months that lie ahead.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We would love to invite all of our guests and everyone else to visit the Great Ocean Road, to visit Lorne,&#8221; he said. &#8220;This is a prime spot.
