City of Greater Geelong councillor Ron Nelson has stepped down from his role as deputy mayor but will remain on the council.<\/p>\n
Cr Nelson, who is understood to be seeking Liberal Party preselection for the state seat of South Barwon, announced his intention to step down from the role at the start of the council\u2019s February meeting on Tuesday night.<\/p>\n
The move comes as the council prepares to adopt new guidelines for councillors intending to run in state or federal elections.<\/p>\n
According to council papers, these guidelines are designed to maintain a clear separation between council business and electoral activity, while supporting ethical conduct and protecting the integrity and reputation of the organisation.<\/p>\n
Mayor Stretch Kontelj thanked Cr Nelson for his service in the role.<\/p>\n
\u201cCr Nelson has served our community with dedication and care, and I sincerely thank him for the contribution he has made in the deputy mayor position,\u201d Cr Kontelj said.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe has been a steady and considered presence, always focused on the best interests of Greater Geelong.<\/p>\n
\u201cImportantly, Cr Nelson is stepping down from the role of deputy mayor only and will continue to serve as a councillor.\u201d<\/p>\n
A special council meeting will be held at 6pm on Tuesday 3 March, to elect a new deputy mayor.<\/p>\n
