AFTER two major industrial fires in as many weeks, people are being reminded to be fire-safe at home and at work.<\/p>\n

North Geelong residents were issued with safety warnings twice in the first week of March in relation to a hazardous chemical fire and an explosion risk.<\/p>\n

Both fires were contained but are reminders to keep chemicals and gas bottles contained safely.<\/p>\n

Fire Rescue Victoria has urged residents to remain vigilant year-round.<\/p>\n

“A fire in your home can be devastating, even fatal,” a Fire Rescue Victoria spokesperson said.<\/p>\n

“Once a fire starts it can spread rapidly putting you and your loved ones at risk.<\/p>\n

“While the dangers of fire are very real, there is a lot you can do to protect yourself, your family and your home.”<\/p>\n

Chemical and gas fires have additional complexity due to potential chemical reactions, hazardous fumes and explosions.<\/p>\n

Basic storage in residential homes can help reduce the risk of fire.<\/p>\n

Gas bottles should be stored outside, upright and away from heat. Before use, gas hoses connected to barbecues should be tested and only ever used outside, at least 50cm from a wall or fence.<\/p>\n

People storing chemicals should keep them away from ignition sources and out of reach of children.<\/p>\n

If those chemicals are no longer needed, they should be disposed of correctly, never down the drain or in regular rubbish collection.<\/p>\n

Sustainability Victoria hosts Detox Your Home events where residents can safely dispose of various household chemicals and fuels. Chemicals are also labelled with specific disposal instructions.<\/p>\n
