“Across cultures and countries, Iftar is observed with deep reverence, bringing families and communities together at sunset to break the fast, often beginning with dates and water, followed by a shared meal. It’s not just about food \u2014 it’s about community, gratitude and generosity,” ISG secretary Mumtaz Akhtar said.<\/p>\n
Since its inception the iftar has grown from an informal affair to one that welcomes up to 30 attendees each night.<\/p>\n
Akhtar said the community had pulled together in a stronger way this year to ensure that people in need of connection during Ramadan can get access to it.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n “The daily iftar at the mosque really started through the initiative of a small group of dedicated community members,” she said.<\/p>\n “Sister Fatima, Brother Ahmed, Brother Ahmed Rafaie and myself took the lead in organising it. We coordinated the roster, encouraged community participation and made sure everything ran smoothly each evening.<\/p>\n “Even though we took the lead, it has always been a community effort. Families and individuals from the community contributed towards iftar meals and food, and many volunteers help with setting up, serving and cleaning. Over the years more community members have become involved, which has helped the project continue and grow.”<\/p>\n This year, the society has welcomed local, state, and federal politicians to the event and local services. It has been a welcome opportunity to share experiences with the broader Geelong community.<\/p>\n For international students, reverts, and community members who do not have extended family in the region, the iftar ensures they are not spending Ramadan alone.<\/p>\n “People are always very appreciative. Many attendees say it means a lot to them to have somewhere to go where they feel welcomed and supported during Ramadan,” Akhtar said.<\/p>\n “For some, it becomes a daily routine and a chance to connect with others in the community.
