AS a Councillor I am very fortunate to celebrate the incredible people who contribute daily to our community.<\/p>\n

A highlight for me every year is hosting the Women in Community Life Awards as part of the City’s International Women’s Day celebrations.<\/p>\n

For 11 years, this event has recognised women who have promoted and advanced gender equity in our community.<\/p>\n

This year’s event celebrated the 52 past winners and over 200 past nominees, whose work has enriched our City of Greater Geelong.<\/p>\n

Coinciding with these celebrations, we’re proud to announce funding for the ‘EmpowerHer’ Leadership Scholarship supporting two local women to advance their\u00a0leadership skills.<\/p>\n

The scholarships will allow recipients to attend the five-day Igniting Leadership Program, delivered by Leadership Victoria.<\/p>\n

The participants will develop their leadership foundations by exploring their strengths and values, learning to navigate change and developing interpersonal skills focused on building trust and influence.<\/p>\n

These scholarships will provide an invaluable opportunity to support women and girls in our community, equipping them with the tools and confidence to make a difference.<\/p>\n

We want to open doors to women who are ready to grow and to lead!<\/p>\n

So, if know someone who fits the bill, please encourage them to apply. Or apply yourself!<\/p>\n

Expressions of interest are now open until 5pm on Thursday 9 April at geelong.link\/WICL<\/a><\/p>\n

It is critical that we continue to work together to champion women’s leadership here in\u00a0Greater Geelong.<\/p>\n

At the City, we’re driving several initiatives to better understand the needs of women in our municipality.<\/p>\n

The Women in Community Life Advisory Committee was established in 2013 to advise Council on matters relating to women’s participation, representation and leadership in community life.<\/p>\n

As the committee chair, it’s my great privilege to work alongside an inspiring, resilient and driven group of women, working tirelessly to make our region a fairer and more equitable place for us all to thrive.<\/p>\n

But we know we still have a long way to go.<\/p>\n

The findings of the 2024 Geelong Preventative Health Survey showed that participants who identified as female were more than twice as likely to feel unsafe within our community, when compared to male respondents.<\/p>\n

Female participants reported higher levels of psychological distress, as well as higher levels of financial insecurity, with 36 per cent of respondents concerned that at some point that they would run out of money for food in 2024.<\/p>\n

It’s vital that all of us \u2013 not just women \u2013 are advocating for a fairer and more equal place for all.<\/p>\n
