Footy smarts still separate players more than anything else, and sometimes it\u2019s the little cheeky ones that make the biggest difference.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"275\" data-end=\"620\">I look at what Ben Keays did late in that game and I love it. Told the fan to hold onto the ball, bought his teammates time, reset the defence. That\u2019s not in any game plan, that\u2019s just being sharp in the moment. We talk about systems all the time, but those moments come down to players thinking quicker than everyone else. That\u2019s winning footy.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"275\" data-end=\"620\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border-radius: 12px;\" src=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/embed\/show\/7s7Hq2MqZi0bh9Zpwu12xf?utm_source=generator\" width=\"100%\" height=\"152\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-testid=\"embed-iframe\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"622\" data-end=\"814\">Now, does the AFL need to look at it? Maybe. Because if everyone starts doing it, you\u2019ll have chaos. But right now, I\u2019m calling it what it is. Smart play.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"816\" data-end=\"1016\">The second one, and this is where I might lose a few people, is the taunting. I can\u2019t stand the head tap. I know exactly what it\u2019s trying to do and it\u2019s not tough, it\u2019s not clever, it\u2019s just annoying.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1018\" data-end=\"1334\">If you\u2019re going to give someone a bit, do it properly. Line them up, beat them in a contest, hurt them on the scoreboard. The little tap on the head stuff, especially when it gets personal, that doesn\u2019t earn you respect inside a club. And the frustrating part is the other bloke can\u2019t respond without getting pinged.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1336\" data-end=\"1477\">I\u2019ve always thought if you do it, you should be prepared for what comes next. That\u2019s probably a bit old school, but that\u2019s how players think.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1479\" data-end=\"1606\">North Melbourne was the third one, and this is where the reality hits. They showed a bit early, but they\u2019re just not ready yet.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1608\" data-end=\"1825\">There\u2019s a difference between looking good for a quarter and being able to hold it when the game shifts. Good teams absorb pressure and respond. Young teams ride the wave and then fall away. That\u2019s exactly what we saw.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1827\" data-end=\"1975\">Inside a club, that\u2019s where the message is simple. Effort isn\u2019t enough. It\u2019s about consistency, composure and doing it when it\u2019s not going your way.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1977\" data-end=\"2068\">The fourth one is Harley Reid, and he\u2019s now officially the bloke everyone wants a piece of.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2070\" data-end=\"2286\">We\u2019ve seen it before. Once you chirp a bit and play with that edge, you get attention. And I like that about him, I really do. But the competition doesn\u2019t let that slide. Every week now, someone is going to test him.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2288\" data-end=\"2416\">That\u2019s the next step. Can he handle it, stay composed and still impact the game? Because it\u2019s coming whether he likes it or not.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2418\" data-end=\"2509\">And the last one, and this might sound a bit dramatic but I don\u2019t think it is, is Essendon.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2511\" data-end=\"2596\">If they lose this week, it\u2019s not just another loss. It\u2019s going to open everything up.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2598\" data-end=\"2850\">You start hearing about recruiting, missed picks, no finals success. That stuff builds over time and eventually it lands. I\u2019ve been around clubs when it does, and it\u2019s not comfortable. It creeps in, then all of a sudden everyone\u2019s under the microscope.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2852\" data-end=\"2933\">There\u2019s already a bit of noise there. Another loss and it won\u2019t be quiet anymore.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2935\" data-end=\"3038\">So yeah, five things from the weekend. Some serious, some a bit tongue in cheek, but all of it matters.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3040\" data-end=\"3128\">Because the game\u2019s always telling you something.
