THE 35,000 daily Barwon Heads Road users are one step closer to a works-free commute with the next phase of construction now under way.<\/p>\n
The widening of the Armstrong Creek Bridge has begun with nine beams craned into position last week ready for concrete to be poured to create the road surface on the west side of the bridge.<\/p>\n
Works began in November last year to widen the bridge to four lanes, allowing for better flow of traffic towards the Geelong CBD.<\/p>\n
Traffic is expected to be allowed onto the newly widened bridge by the end of 2026 before the same widening works begin on the east-bound side.<\/p>\n
The bridge project is part of stage 2A of the Barwon Heads Road and is on track to be completed in late 2027. Construction on stage 2b, between Lake and Lower Duneed roads, is expected to start later this year.<\/p>\n
Students from St Catherine of Siena Catholic Primary School attended the worksite to see the crane in action, donning it Titanic Jack.<\/p>\n
Their school is one of three local schools that are in the running for $5,000 as part of the state government-run Barwon Heads Road Upgrade Shop to the Top competition.<\/p>\n
The program aims to support local businesses and schools by encouraging shoppers to earn points for their schools by spending at local stores.<\/p>\n
The school with the most points will earn $5,000 towards education resources.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
