MORE than 22,700 free school uniforms and essential items have been distributed to students across the Geelong region as part of a state government support program.<\/p>\n
The figures, released last week, show the items were delivered to students at 57 schools.<\/p>\n
The support is provided through the affordable school uniform program, which is delivered by State Schools’ Relief to students in public schools who need assistance.<\/p>\n
Geelong MP, Christine Couzens, said no child should miss out on a great education because they could not afford a school uniform.<\/p>\n
“Programs like the affordable school uniform initiative aren’t just about uniforms \u2013 they’re about making sure no family has to choose between putting food on the table and sending their kids to school properly equipped,” she said.<\/p>\n
The Victorian government has also changed the student dress code policy to remove requirements for logos on shorts, pants, skirts and socks in public schools.<\/p>\n
The change is expected to reduce uniform costs, with an estimated saving of up to $167 for families with two children in public school.<\/p>\n
Uniforms with logos already purchased can continue to be worn under the updated policy.<\/p>\n
Lara MP, Ella George, said the program targeted the growing cost of getting children ready for school.<\/p>\n
“We know families are doing it tough right now, the cost of groceries, petrol, bills and even getting the kids ready for school all adds up,” she said. “That’s why we’re focused on delivering real, practical relief.”<\/p>\n
Across Victoria, more than 500,000 uniforms and essential items have been distributed since the start\u00a0of 2024.<\/p>\n
The program has received more than 200,000 applications during\u00a0that period.<\/p>\n
