{"id":129394,"date":"2026-04-09T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-04-08T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/?p=129394"},"modified":"2026-04-08T15:19:07","modified_gmt":"2026-04-08T05:19:07","slug":"big-wins-open-bfl-season","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/sport\/big-wins-open-bfl-season\/","title":{"rendered":"Big wins open BFL season"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>IT may have been the Surf Coast Suns&#8217; first game of senior football but they were not the only ones making history.<\/p>\n<p>Torquay opened their 2026 Bellarine Football League (BFL) campaign with a bang, handing the newcomers a mammoth\u00a0148-point belting.<\/p>\n<p>It was one of a myriad of floggings across the long weekend to open the BFL season.<\/p>\n<p>Tynan Smith made easy work, kicking 11 of the Tigers&#8217; 25 goals to be the undisputed best on ground.<\/p>\n<p>Captain Ben McNamara said the goals were far from individual efforts.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We pride ourselves on being a team first team,&#8221; McNamara said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/04\/SunsVsTTRound1048_00472.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Torquay captain James Darke gets a handball away. Photo: Michael Chambers.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When it&#8217;s a one-sided game like that you can get a bit selfish, but our playing group really are team first and the trust is there that you&#8217;re going to do the right thing by the team every time, and I think that showed in our second half.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was nice to see Tynan get 11. He was on the end of a lot of hard work from a lot of guys.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Suns captain Joss Howlett said there was relief in having played their first game after a long build up.<\/p>\n<p>Howlett admitted the side was deflated after the game but will turn its focus to key learnings in the coming weeks.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/04\/SunsVsTTRound1068_00448.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Surf Coast Suns played their first senior game against the Torquay Tigers last weekend. Photo: Michael Chambers.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>He said the game exposed the side&#8217;s weaknesses in a way that will allow them to refocus for the remainder of their inaugural season.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, reigning premiers, Anglesea, had a comfortable win over Ocean Grove, and Geelong Amateur cruised to a 60-point win over Modewarre in their Good Friday clashes.<\/p>\n<p>Barwon Heads and Queenscliff also collected points in round 1.
