AS Victoria’s Container Deposit Scheme (CDS Vic) becomes part of everyday life, communities across Victoria’s west are discovering that a 10-cent refund can go a long way.<\/p>\n

At Geelong Poultry Club, it’s helping young exhibitors spread their wings. The club is dedicated to maintaining and improving recognised poultry breeds while promoting responsible poultry keeping across the wider community.<\/p>\n

Through shows, competitions, demonstrations and lectures, the club brings together education, community spirit and a shared loved of all things feathered.<\/p>\n

Funds raised through CDS Vic refund donations have helped renovated the junior wing of the poultry pavilion at the Geelong Showgrounds, creating a welcoming space for young exhibitors.<\/p>\n

The upgraded area has already helped spark new enthusiasm and inspired the club’s first Junior Day on Saturday 11 April, where children aged 8 to 15 can learn the basics of caring for, washing and preparing poultry for exhibition.<\/p>\n

Thomas Grantham, president of the Geelong and District Poultry Club, said having a dedicated space for juniors has made the experience far less intimidating and much more enjoyable for the kids.<\/p>\n

“It’s helping them build confidence, make friends and discover a passion for poultry exhibition,” Grantham said.<\/p>\n

Tony Catania, west Zone network operator TOMRA Cleanaway general manager of Victoria, said the scheme is helping create opportunities for younger generations at a local level.<\/p>\n

“The Geelong Poultry Club show how small recycling habits can help local communities create fun, hands-on opportunities for the next generation,” he said.<\/p>\n
