THE Victorian Fisheries Authority will again open the gates to its Snobs Creek Hatchery next month, offering a chance for the public to step inside one of the state\u2019s key fish breeding facilities.<\/p>\n
Held annually, the open day invites visitors to explore the site at their own place, with access to areas that are usually closed.<\/p>\n
Since opening in 1948, the hatchery has placed an important role in stocking Victoria\u2019s waterways, producing species ranging from Murray cod to brown and rainbow trout, as well as threatened natives including trout cod and Macquarie perch.<\/p>\n
On the day, visitors will be able to tour the hatchery, including the newer conservation facilities and the recently completed Macquarie Perch Recovery Centre, while speaking directly with staff about the work being done to breed, raise and release fish across the state.<\/p>\n
There will also be plenty happening beyond the tours, with trout feeding, educational activities for children and live demonstrations such as trout anatomy dissections with Dr Corey Green.<\/p>\n
Fisheries officers and education staff will be available throughout the day, alongside fishing personality Robbie Alexander, who will meet visitors and share his expertise.<\/p>\n
Casting clinics, a stocking truck display and an aquaculture hub featuring smoked trout samples will add to the experience, along with live music, a coffee van and a sausage sizzle.<\/p>\n
Visitors can also try their luck on a fish-themed spinning wheel or grab a photo with the large fish sculpture at the front of the hatchery.<\/p>\n
The Snobs Creek Hatchery open day will be held on Sunday 3 May between 9am and 2pm.<\/p>\n
The facility is at 455 Goulburn Valley Highway, Eildon.<\/p>\n
