Photo: Nathan Rivalland.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>What started as a creative outlet gradually became intertwined with his experience as a patient, over four years of treatment and multiple knee and hip surgeries.<\/p>\n<p>He said the artwork he encountered during rehabilitation stayed with him \u2013 not for what it was, but for what it offered.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Usually, you&#8217;re here for a few weeks and as you&#8217;re hobbling around, the artwork takes your mind off the pain and gives you something to focus on,&#8221; Walsh said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Being in a hospital is not exactly the nicest place to be, but doing this brightens up the days of those who need it.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/04\/IMG_3278_16238.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Installed across Epworth\u2019s public spaces, Paul Walsh hopes the collection will bring moments of optimism to the hospital&#8217;s patients. Photo: Nathan Rivalland.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Water and art is so soothing and is a great rehab tool for any ailment. It calms their nerves down and helps them to recover. The ward is full of art for this purpose.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Now exhibiting his own work in the space, Walsh hopes to offer that same sense of distraction and calm to others.<\/p>\n<p>The collection is a vivid exploration of native Victorian fish, brought to life through layered pastel, reflective surfaces and careful detail.<\/p>\n<p>The artist has exhibited across Victoria, including in Hamilton, Port Fairy, Ocean Grove, Collingwood and Portarlington, but said this installation carries particular meaning.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/04\/IMG_3282_16224.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The exhibition is on display on level one at Epworth Geelong until the end of May. Photo: Nathan Rivalland.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The feedback from patients has been amazing,&#8221; Walsh said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There are usually nurses and doctors coming into the space to just chill out and relax.
