VICTORIAN drivers will get 20 per cent off their vehicle registration under a new one-off cost-of-living rebate.<\/p>\n
The measure comes as fuel prices continue to climb, driven in part by ongoing conflict in the Middle East.<\/p>\n
Under the rebate, owners of cars, utes and other vehicles under 4.5 tonnes will be able to claim back 20 per cent of their 2025-26 registration costs.<\/p>\n
With annual registration fees currently reaching up to $930.70, the refund could return as much as $186 for a single vehicle, or $372 for households with two cars.<\/p>\n
In regional areas including Geelong and Ballarat, where registration costs are lower at up to $871.30, motorists would receive up to $174.26 back.<\/p>\n
The rebate applies to vehicles used for personal purposes, with claims limited to two vehicles per person.<\/p>\n
Applications will open on 1 June through the Service Victoria website, and close on 31 July.<\/p>\n
The car registration rebate is expected to cost about $750 million, with Premier Jacinta Allan saying it has been factored into the state budget.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs premier, I\u2019m determined to use government to help Victorians who are under pressure,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe can afford it because it\u2019s one-off cost-of-living help right now, while we are delivering a surplus.\u201d<\/p>\n
It comes after the government announced the rollout of free public transport across the state.<\/p>\n
Travel will remain free until the end of May before shifting to half-price fares for the rest of the year.<\/p>\n
