{"id":130382,"date":"2026-04-30T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-04-29T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/?p=130382"},"modified":"2026-04-29T20:02:35","modified_gmt":"2026-04-29T10:02:35","slug":"barwon-heads-golden-girl-named-inaugural-geelong-medal-recipient","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/news\/barwon-heads-golden-girl-named-inaugural-geelong-medal-recipient\/","title":{"rendered":"Barwon Heads golden girl named inaugural Geelong Medal recipient"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>JAKARA Anthony has become the first recipient of the Geelong Medal, a new honour recognising elite sporting achievement across the region.<\/p>\n<p>The Barwon Heads freestyle skier was presented with the inaugural award by mayor Stretch Kontelj on Tuesday, just months after making history in February as the first Australian to win multiple Winter Olympic gold medals.<\/p>\n<p>Despite her coastal upbringing, Anthony said winter sport had always had her heart.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I was born in Cairns, I live at the beach here in Barwon Heads, everything&#8217;s kind of stacked up against me to succeed in winter sport, but where there&#8217;s a will, there&#8217;s a way and a supportive family as well,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Taking up the opportunities when they arise, like the Barwon Sports Academy and many other opportunities I&#8217;ve had along my career, you don&#8217;t know what&#8217;s going to be that one thing that makes a difference or what you&#8217;re going to learn from each opportunity.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/04\/IMG_3393_81272.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"472\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Geelong Medal was designed by local artist Phillip Doggett-Williams. Photo: Tahlia Sinclair.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Geelong Medal will be awarded to individuals or teams from the region who achieve success at a national or international level, with Kontelj saying it was fitting Anthony would set the benchmark.<\/p>\n<p>Federal Corangamite MP Libby Coker said Anthony&#8217;s achievements extended well beyond the podium.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You have performed under immense pressure and represented our region and our nation with such determination of grace and skill,&#8221; Coker said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;But beyond the medals and historic achievements, what makes your story so powerful is what it means to young people right across our community.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You have shown them that no dream is too big.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Anthony said she was surprised to learn the medal had not been awarded before.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s such an honour to receive the Geelong Medal and be the inaugural recipient,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Geelong region has been such a big part of my life \u2013 and it still is \u2013 and was such a big part of developing me into the athlete and the person that I am.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s been a really special place and it&#8217;s why I keep coming back here.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/04\/MayorKonteljOAMwithJ_84723.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"357\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Geelong mayor Stretch Kontelj and Jakara Anthony. Photo: Supplied.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>She acknowledged Barwon Heads Primary School and Christian College for their impact on her, as well as the Geelong Cats and Barwon Sports Academy for supporting her journey as an athlete.<\/p>\n<p>The medal, designed by Geelong artist Phillip Doggett-Williams, features Geelong iconography.<\/p>\n<p>Doggett-Williams said he walked through the city sketching elements of the landscape as he developed the concept.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The image on the medal itself is a compilation of different elements in the [Geelong] landscape,&#8221; Doggett-Williams said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;For example, the decorative motif around the side is from the sculpture down by the sea, the one of the shark fins, but I also was thinking about the challenge of capturing the authenticity of the work.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Members of Anthony&#8217;s family, Geelong city councillors and state politicians attended the ceremony.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>JAKARA Anthony has become the first recipient of the Geelong Medal, a new honour recognising elite sporting achievement across the region.
