A Geelong paddler will take her place on the world stage, with Alexis Jane selected for the World Kayak Championships in Argentina later this year.<\/p>\n

The 19-year-old from Waurn Ponds will compete in the under-23 kayak marathon event, capping a rapid rise in the sport.<\/p>\n

Jane has been part of the Jan Juc Surf Life Saving Club since she was seven, spending as much time as possible on the Surf Coast \u2013 even riding her bike down from home before she had her licence.<\/p>\n

She found her stride in surf ski in the under-17 ranks and, by her own account, “fell in love with paddling”. Kayaking followed soon after, but she only committed to the discipline seriously two years ago.<\/p>\n

A strong start to 2026 across multiple events earned her national selection in April. It is a moment she is still coming to terms with.<\/p>\n

“It is still sinking in that I get to represent Australia,” she said.<\/p>\n

“It is something I dreamt of as a kid but never actually thought would happen. I am beyond excited to rep the green and gold and hope to do everyone proud.”<\/p>\n

Preparation for October’s championships will be demanding, with winter training already front of mind.<\/p>\n

“With winter approaching, preparation will involve many cold, dark mornings out on the Barwon River,” Jane said.<\/p>\n

“Along with paddling, I will incorporate strength work and running. Then to practice my skills, I will be doing portaging and wash riding practice.”<\/p>\n

Jane said her focus in Argentina would be on execution as much as result.<\/p>\n

“My biggest aim is to leave it all out on the water,” she said. “I want to be proud of my performance and know I gave everything I had.<\/p>\n

“My other goals include a strong start, clean portages, good strategy and well-executed race.”<\/p>\n

Away from competition, she is studying a double degree in mechanical engineering and business, while also working as a lifeguard, patrol captain and swim coach across several clubs and centres.<\/p>\n
