Star Geelong Venom recruit Bec Cole is approaching her first season in blue and white with a clear sense of purpose.<\/p>\n
The former Australian Opal signed a two-year deal with the Venom last week after five seasons and two championships with the Southside Flyers.<\/p>\n
A sharp off-ball mover and decisive playmaker, Cole has built a reputation as one of the WNBL’s most reliable guards.<\/p>\n
Her move to Geelong signals a new chapter in an already accomplished career.<\/p>\n
“It’s a really exciting challenge,” Cole said. “I always compare it to when I was at Dandenong, and we rebranded to the Flyers. Geelong, just like the Flyers then, is new and it’s a baby.<\/p>\n
“I can’t wait to bring what I do on the court to the fans. I love it just as much off the court with getting more eyes on the game and getting involved in the community.<\/p>\n
“Our women’s game is in incredible shape, and I want to raise the profile of not only our basketball talents, but us as role-models and human beings.”<\/p>\n
Cole will reunite with incoming coach Cheryl Chambers, following a successful period together at the Flyers.<\/p>\n
It was under Chambers’ guidance that Cole produced some of her best basketball, thriving in a system built on defensive pressure.<\/p>\n
For Cole, the reunion carries added meaning.<\/p>\n
“She coached me in juniors in the national team and then obviously we had those five years at the Flyers,” she said.<\/p>\n
“I’m so excited to be back with Cheryl. With our experience together, we can’t wait to impart that wisdom.”<\/p>\n
Cole said the focus now shifts to building the foundations of a new group.<\/p>\n
“If you’re a team player, you work hard and have fun; the opportunities for you are endless,” she said.<\/p>\n
“Finals and winning a championship is the goal, but first we’ve got to establish that trust, bond everyone and feel safe.<\/p>\n
“We want to work hard every day, and most of all have fun. If you’re not doing that, what’s the point?”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
