{"id":130494,"date":"2026-05-04T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-05-03T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/?p=130494"},"modified":"2026-04-29T23:05:01","modified_gmt":"2026-04-29T13:05:01","slug":"rbg-of-many-one-set-for-geelong-exclusive","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/living\/rbg-of-many-one-set-for-geelong-exclusive\/","title":{"rendered":"RBG: Of Many, One set for Geelong exclusive"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>NYAH BARNES<\/p>\n<p>Geelong audiences will get a rare chance to see one of Australia&#8217;s most acclaimed theatre productions when RBG: Of Many, One comes exclusively to Geelong Arts Centre for a limited season in May.<\/p>\n<p>The Sydney Theatre Company production, starring Heather Mitchell as Ruth Bader Ginsburg, has already played to sold-out seasons in Sydney and Melbourne.<\/p>\n<p>Geelong Arts Centre chief executive and creative director Rhys Holden said strong demand made bringing it to the region an easy decision.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We really needed to get it here,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/05\/HeatherMitchellinSTC_35426.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">CEO and creative director of Geelong Arts Centre said ticket sales have been going very well, with people coming from around the state to see it. Photo: Prudence Upton.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s really our role to bring the greatest art that we can from around the country to people right here in Geelong.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Written by Suzie Miller, the play traces Ginsburg&#8217;s rise to become one of the most influential judges in the United States, while also exploring the personal experiences that shaped her.<\/p>\n<p>Mitchell said the project began with a conversation with Miller, a long-time friend, during the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I was so impressed by [Ruth Bader Ginsburg] \u2013 not only her legal standing and what she did for the legal system, for people and for women in particular \u2013 but her personal life was such a revelation to me,&#8221; Mitchell said.<\/p>\n<p>That initial discussion quickly evolved into a script.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Within three months [Miller had] written the script,&#8221; Mitchell said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/05\/RBG_Rehearsal_STC_Im_35425.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Sydney Theatre Company show has toured around Australia and returns to Victoria for an exclusive season at Geelong Arts Centre in May. Photo: Prudence Upton.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&#8220;We took it to Kip Williams at the Sydney Theatre Company, and they read it to him and he said, &#8216;Let&#8217;s do it&#8217;.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>She said the production&#8217;s strength lies in how it balances Ginsburg&#8217;s public legacy with her private world.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Suzie&#8217;s written a magnificent script, and she balances it so brilliantly,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>Structured in three parts, the work moves through different stages of Ginsburg&#8217;s life and demands a performance that combines technical precision with emotional depth.<\/p>\n<p>Mitchell said she was struck by unexpected parallels between her own life and Ginsburg&#8217;s, which helped shape her performance.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I find the access to playing her personal life just involuntary. It just is there for me,&#8221; Mitchell said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I didn&#8217;t have to try and imagine what those things would be like; I just could feel them.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Holden said the production is timely, noting its themes of justice, equality and standing up for values continue to resonate.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;RBG really was a once in a generation person,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 599px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/05\/RBG_Rehearsal_STC_Im_35414.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"599\" height=\"399\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">RBG: Of Many, One stars Heather Mitchell as Ruth Bader Ginsberg in a performance she says continues to be relevant today.
