{"id":130681,"date":"2026-05-08T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-05-07T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/?p=130681"},"modified":"2026-05-07T11:05:14","modified_gmt":"2026-05-07T01:05:14","slug":"geelong-gymnasts-take-their-shot-in-green-and-gold","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/sport\/geelong-gymnasts-take-their-shot-in-green-and-gold\/","title":{"rendered":"Geelong gymnasts take their shot in green and gold"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>GEELONG&#8217;S next generation of gymnasts will take to the international stage this weekend, with Olivia Meaney and Asher Bayles selected to represent Australia at the Oceanic Artistic Championships in Brisbane.<\/p>\n<p>The duo will wear the green and gold across the two-day event, with 14-year-old Meaney named in the junior artistic team and 18-year-old Bayles in the senior ranks.<\/p>\n<p>Both train at YMCA Geelong Gymnastics Club and have already built strong resumes representing Victoria and Australia.<\/p>\n<p>For Meaney, it will be her fourth appearance in an Australian team. She will compete alongside four teammates against New Zealand for the Continental Cup, across bars, beam, floor and vault.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/05\/517623268_7409084824_14939.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Bayles has also competed for both Victoria and Australia multiple times. Photo: YMCA Geelong.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It feels pretty amazing, because I am still young and to be selected to represent Australia is something I have dreamt of and I am very proud of,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;To be able to travel to different countries and compete against the best junior gymnasts in the world feels pretty crazy.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Meaney trains about 25 hours a week, balancing school with a demanding schedule that includes skill work, strength and conditioning, dance and recovery.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;My sessions include skill work, flexibility, strength and conditioning, dance, pilates, recovery, sometimes meetings or appointments,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You have to be very organised with equipment and food.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Sleep for me is really important. I have to be organised well ahead and have my stuff ready to communicate well with my teachers. Photo: YMCA Geelong.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Despite her age, she already has her sights set on the Youth Olympics later this year and credits her support network for helping her pursue those goals.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I am really lucky to have great support from friends and family who have supported me in lots of different ways,&#8221; Meaney said. &#8220;I couldn&#8217;t do what I do without that support.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Bayles will also compete across all four apparatus and arrives in strong form after travelling to Canberra for Commonwealth Games trials ahead of July&#8217;s event in Glasgow.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;ve always loved being upside down and I love the fact I&#8217;m constantly challenged and it never gets boring,&#8221; Bayles said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s always a bit surreal being selected, and it motivates me to keep going in the sport as it&#8217;s a reminder all my hard work is actually paying off.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>She said the trial experience had sharpened her preparation heading into Brisbane.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was pretty nerve wracking with all of the media and judges, but was a good experience going into continental championships,&#8221; Bayles said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;[The trials were] helpful in my preparation as it&#8217;s another chance for me to practice my routines under pressure and out of my gym and comfort zone.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/05\/2026-05-0508.24.24_10423.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Meaney will compete in a four-girl team across all four apparatuses. Photo: Matthew O\u2019Donnell\/Hails + Shine.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s been over a year since I last represented Australia, so it&#8217;s exciting to get back on the competition floor and compete with the skills I&#8217;ve spent the past year working on.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Looking beyond this weekend, Bayles said a place at the Commonwealth Games would be a dream come true.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It would be a really surreal experience competing at such a big competition and really cool to compete with a big crowd and lots of other sports,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Gymnastics competitions aren&#8217;t usually that big in Australia, so it&#8217;s always exciting to compete overseas where it&#8217;s more watched and popular.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>With Brisbane the immediate focus and bigger targets ahead, Meaney and Bayles are continuing to build on Geelong&#8217;s growing presence in elite gymnastics.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>GEELONG&#8217;S next generation of gymnasts will take to the international stage this weekend, with Olivia Meaney and Asher Bayles selected to represent Australia at the Oceanic Artistic Championships in Brisbane.
