{"id":130822,"date":"2026-05-08T10:53:34","date_gmt":"2026-05-08T00:53:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/?p=130822"},"modified":"2026-05-08T10:53:34","modified_gmt":"2026-05-08T00:53:34","slug":"falcons-to-head-to-torquay-for-community-showcase","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/news\/falcons-to-head-to-torquay-for-community-showcase\/","title":{"rendered":"Falcons to head to Torquay for community showcase"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Geelong Falcons will bring top-tier junior footy to the Surf Coast this weekend, with their boys and girls sides taking on the Calder Cannons at Torquay\u2019s McCartney Oval.<\/p>\n<p>The matches form part of the club\u2019s community showcase series, with four games to be played at local grounds across the region, with Torquay hosting the opening round on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>Further fixtures include a standalone girls clash against Oakleigh at Geelong West\u2019s Scaada Stadium in July, before both programs head to Colac and Leopold in August to face the Western Jets and GWV Rebels.<\/p>\n<p>Saturday\u2019s clash will mark the first time the female Falcons have played at McCartney Oval, adding to a fixture that has consistently drawn strong local crowds.<\/p>\n<p>Falcons talent lead Jesse Drever said the community games had become a key part of the Talent League season, giving players the chance to reconnect with their grassroots clubs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur community games have become such an important part of our annual Talent League fixture,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor our players, it is the chance to play at the highest junior level in front of family and friends who have seen them through their entire junior journey, and is a celebration of the contributions of their community clubs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are also bringing games to new facilities this year, which really gives us the chance to showcase the reaches of our region.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe always have such great support when we bring games back \u2018home\u2019, and are looking forward to another big weekend at McCartney Oval.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 602px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2026\/05\/BoysTeamRunout_03172.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"602\" height=\"401\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Falcons will also play at Geelong West, Colac and Leopold&#8217;s home grounds as part of their community showcase. Photo: Chris Laidlaw.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div class=\"mceTemp\"><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Boys coach Paul Corrigan said playing locally was a reward for players and an opportunity to connect with supporters.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAny time we get to play in our region is a great reward for our players and club,\u201d Corrigan said. \u201cWe get to showcase what we are about to families and friends of the players representing the Geelong Falcons.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Girls coach Tash Heffernan said the local fixture also played an important role in inspiring the next generation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe opportunity to play locally brings not only excitement to the players, with the opportunity to play supported by family and friends, but also brings a buzz to the community,\u201d Heffernan said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt allows us to showcase the talent in the region whilst bringing light to the pathway for our up-and-coming junior footballers, who we hope will be watching on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 599px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 \" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2026\/05\/LuaPayne2_95239.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"599\" height=\"988\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lua Payne (pictured) is the Falcons girls captain. Photo: Chris Laidlaw.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Torquay Football Club will be well represented, with seven local players named across both squads \u2014 Jack Pickett, Van Rahilly and Charlie Montebello in the boys program, and Olivia Bradshaw, Greea McKeegan, Marlie Collett and Ella Condon in the girls.<\/p>\n<p>On the field, both sides will be chasing important wins.
