In regional and rural areas, using sports language is especially prominent and can form part of the social currency of the area.<\/p>\n
Dr Symons said this social currency is why people might start using language from sports they are not fans of, such as someone who does not engage in racing saying they are “champing at the bit”.<\/p>\n
“In regional and rural areas people just might naturally use [sports language] to feel more included in the conversation or feel like they’re part of their community because sports are so central to smaller communities,” she said.<\/p>\n
Formerly the ‘sport of kings’, racing’s unique jargon has infiltrated the English language, regardless of how closely someone follows the sport itself.<\/p>\n
Though some of the practices that led to racing phrases \u2013 there are no longer goats to be gotten from horses’ stables \u2013 have ceased, the longevity of the sport’s language cannot be understated.<\/p>\n
