It connects people to times and places, carries meaning across generations and influences the way we speak in interesting ways.

Horse racing has captivated audiences since ancient times and, over the years, its jargon has filtered into everyday speech.

Its vernacular has become the dialect of modern sport, racing-related or otherwise.

Whether you are on the home stretch, celebrating a hands-down win, commiserating a dead heat or hoping for it to come down to the wire, racing has become deeply embedded in the way people communicate.

Deakin University lecturer in communication Dr Kasey Symons said language in sport can both unite and divide communities.

A form of cultural capital, Dr Symons said that using or not using certain turns of phrase can isolate individuals from sporting groups.

“Language is really representative of culture,” Dr Symons said.

“For Australian cultural identity, sport is so central to that, so it makes sense that language is naturally coded through sports metaphors and tradition and permeates our conversation more than we probably realise.”

Dr Symons said sporting metaphors help normalise sporting culture as part of Australian identity and can act as a point of entry for inclusion.

Someone using a sports metaphor – whether knowingly or not – signals to others they are engaged in the sporting culture that shapes the nation.

On the other hand, not using or not understanding the meaning of a phrase with sporting roots can create a sense of exclusion.

Dr Symons said that while a lot of phrases with sporting origins can be neutral, language in sport can also be overtly sexist, homophobic and racist.

“I think right now, we’re grappling with that, because sport is so part of our society, we sometimes react to change in a way that is very defensive because we don’t want to lose that idea of tradition and nostalgia when it comes to sport,” she said.

“Some aspects of it are really problematic and do a lot of damage, because language is powerful and can be quite damaging, which we need to move away from.”

Horses at the 2024 Surf Coast Torquay Cup running along the home straight towards the finish line.
