	{"id":131700,"date":"2026-05-29T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-05-28T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/?p=131700"},"modified":"2026-05-27T20:34:22","modified_gmt":"2026-05-27T10:34:22","slug":"stitching-a-fairytale-to-life","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/news\/stitching-a-fairytale-to-life\/","title":{"rendered":"Stitching a fairytale to life"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>MORE than 200 bespoke costumes are helping transport audiences into the world of Beauty and the Beast in one of the most ambitious wardrobe efforts undertaken by the Geelong Lyric Theatre Society.<\/p>\n<p>For costume designers Callie Fry and Lainie Brookman, the scale of the build quickly surpassed expectations.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;When we started, we knew it was going to be big,&#8221; Brookman said. &#8220;[But] it just kept getting bigger.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The enormous costume build begins with the ensemble, who move through multiple transformations during the show \u2013 from villagers to tavern patrons, then members of the mob and finally the elaborate costumes of the finale.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_187960\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-187960\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-187960\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/05\/g_55hUd018svcf3l3utc_67627_tn.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"559\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-187960\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The wig for the beast required hair from around six wigs to be meticulously crafted around a mask.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The production embraces the visual spectacle that has made Beauty and the Beast an enduring favourite, led by Belle&#8217;s iconic yellow gown.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The yellow dress is such an iconic part of the movie and part of the show in the story, and [Brookman] has done a phenomenal job,&#8221; Ella Walsh, who plays Belle in the production, said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It really helps to bring the character and the story to life.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The dress also carries a sense of history, incorporating fabric from Lyric Theatre&#8217;s original production nearly two decades ago.<\/p>\n<p>Wigs and makeup complete the transformations. Photo: Geelong Lyric Theatre Society.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Beast&#8217;s costume combines a mask, makeup and enhanced wigs to retain elements of humanity while embracing the character&#8217;s more animalistic side.<\/p>\n<p>Enchanted favourites such as Lumiere and Cogsworth add another layer of theatrical flair.<\/p>\n<p>Fry said it was the combination of all the creative elements that brought the production to life.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You see them on stage with the beautiful sets and projections, their wigs and their makeup \u2026 it&#8217;s pretty magical, really,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>Director James Lee said the creative team&#8217;s brief was to honour the original stage production while ensuring the costumes felt rich, detailed and authentic.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The brief was always that they really wanted to go back to the original first stage production,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>He said the aim was for the costumes to feel lived-in and layered, allowing performers to fully inhabit their characters.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/05\/Promo339_67637.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Throughout the rehearsal process, the cast had to learn to move and dance in a way which would be compatible with their final costumes. Photo: Michael Mason.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The scale of some costumes also presented challenges beyond the wardrobe department.<\/p>\n<p>Co-choreographer and cast member Mienna Brookman said movement often had to be adapted to suit the larger pieces.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;For example, our plates are 1.5m long, so having six humans on stage with six plates that width is such a challenge,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>Much of the choreography relied on small, controlled movements that could still read clearly to the audience while performers navigated the oversized costumes.<\/p>\n<p>Beauty and the Beast runs at Geelong Arts Centre until 7 June.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>MORE than 200 bespoke costumes are helping transport audiences into the world of Beauty and the Beast in one of the most ambitious wardrobe efforts undertaken by the Geelong Lyric Theatre Society.
