THE Gordon is inviting locals to explore career pathways and connect directly with industry at its Apprenticeship and Traineeship Forum.<\/p>\n

Held in collaboration with Skilling the Bay and Workforce Australia Local Jobs, the free event is designed for prospective apprentices and trainees, career changers and parents looking to better understand the opportunities available across the trades and vocational sectors.<\/p>\n

Leading the conversation will be Andy Bugeja, director of education excellence in industry, trades and environment at The Gordon, whose own career pathway highlights the value of an apprenticeship.<\/p>\n

From starting out as an apprentice plumber to now leading trade and industry education, Andy’s journey is one he says began with simply taking a chance.<\/p>\n

“Like many young people, I didn’t have a clear direction at first,” he said. “An apprenticeship opportunity came up, and it turned out to be the best decision I ever made.”<\/p>\n

Bugeja said that experience not only gave him a practical skillset, but also instilled discipline, confidence and a strong work ethic.<\/p>\n

“My apprenticeship was the first thing I truly committed to. It taught me pride in my work and what it means to be a professional,” he said.<\/p>\n

Strong demand for skilled workers is being driven by population growth, housing development and expansion in renewable energy and advanced manufacturing. This makes it an ideal time for people to consider a trade pathway.<\/p>\n

The forum will bring together industry leaders, training providers and support organisations to give attendees insight into what a career as an apprentice or trainee looks like, and how to get started.<\/p>\n

“This event is about making those first steps easier,” Bugeja said. “You’ll be able to ask questions, hear directly from employers and understand what pathways are available.”<\/p>\n

Attendees will also learn about entry points including pre-apprenticeships, VET Delivered to School Students (VETDSS) programs and short courses, as well as the support available through The Gordon and its network of local employers.<\/p>\n

“Reach out, ask questions and make connections. That’s exactly what this forum is designed to help you do,” Bugeja said.<\/p>\n

The forum runs from 5pm to 7.30pm on Wednesday 17 June at The Gordon’s East Geelong Campus.<\/p>\n
