MUSIC is a universal language that unites cultures, transcends borders and brings people from all walks of life together.<\/p>\n

In Greater Geelong, our local musicians, venue operators, educators, bookers, advocates and music lovers continue to bring our city to life.<\/p>\n

Our region has a proud history of live music \u2013 it’s part of our identity.<\/p>\n

From Goanna to Chrissy Amphlett, Magic Dirt to King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard and so many more, Geelong has played a huge role in the journeys of some of Australia’s most iconic acts and bands.<\/p>\n

As chair of the City’s Arts and Culture, Hospitality and Live Entertainment portfolio, the significance of the live music sector not lost on me.<\/p>\n

This portfolio is the only one of its kind in Australian local government. It is a testament to how we, as a council, recognise the invaluable contribution that the arts, hospitality and live entertainment sectors make to both our economy and our cultural identity.<\/p>\n

The positive flow-on effects a thriving music scene has on our broader community cannot be over-stated.<\/p>\n

That’s why I was proud to attend and launch the 2026 Greater Geelong Live Music Summit at Barwon Heads Hotel late last month.<\/p>\n

The summit explored opportunities to strengthen Geelong’s live music ecosystem, support local musicians and venues and examine the role music can play in economic development, tourism, cultural identity and city activation.<\/p>\n

We had the full orchestra of key players in the room, with representation from the Victorian government in attendance alongside representatives from Music Victoria, Adelaide UNESCO City of Music, Oxygen College and Live Music Locator.<\/p>\n

It was a valuable opportunity to hear from all key stakeholders about where we’re really hitting the high notes, while identifying the areas that require further tuning to band together in harmony.<\/p>\n

We explored several game-changing initiatives, including the creation of a Night-Time Economy Advisory Committee, the introduction of Live Music Precinct Overlays and even the potential establishment of a ‘Night Mayor’ role to champion our local nightlife.<\/p>\n

We know that the challenges facing the industry are real. We’re seeing pressure on venues, changes to central Geelong and a shifting economic environment where it’s more difficult for live music to thrive.<\/p>\n

That’s why the City is committed to supporting this sector, not just through events, but through long-term thinking and strategy.<\/p>\n

We know live music is part of what makes our region feel creative, energetic and connected.<\/p>\n

And beyond creating a vibrant, more liveable city, live music plays a critical role in shaping a vibrant and safe night-time economy, while supporting employment across the creative and hospitality sectors.<\/p>\n

To help bolster this industry, we are learning from the very best.<\/p>\n

As Australia’s only UNESCO Creative City of Design, Geelong is increasingly collaborating with other creative cities to share ideas and learn from successful city activation initiatives.<\/p>\n

That’s why it was such a win for us to have Joe Hay, general manager of Adelaide City of Music in attendance at the summit.<\/p>\n

During his visit, Joe met with the City to discuss how small-scale live music events, laneway activations, creative use of vacant shops and youth-focused cultural programming can help reinvigorate central city areas and strengthen the night-time economy.<\/p>\n

At the City, we are interested in how smaller, grassroots music events and creative activations can transform underutilised spaces and create a more vibrant, welcoming and connected city centre.<\/p>\n

By exploring strategies that support our local sounds and hospitality venues, we are building a louder, brighter and more creative future for Geelong.<\/p>\n
