MORE than a decade after it began as a community lantern parade, Geelong West’s Winter Solstice celebration has become one of the suburb’s signature annual events.<\/p>\n

Hosted by Geelong West Neighbourhood House, the free event returns to West Park on 20 June after attracting more than 1,000 people last year.<\/p>\n

Families can expect live music, fire twirling, artisan market stalls, food vendors and a range of children’s activities throughout the evening.<\/p>\n

Geelong West Neighbourhood House manager Jonathan Chee said the celebration offered people a chance to reconnect during the colder months.<\/p>\n

“Winter can be a time when people stay tucked away at home, so this event is really about giving people a reason to get out, see familiar faces and feel part of something local,” he said.<\/p>\n

“It’s a chance to share some food, enjoy the performances, wander the stalls and connect with neighbours.<\/p>\n

“Everyone is welcome, whether you come with family, friends, neighbours or on your own.”<\/p>\n

The lantern parade remains the centrepiece of the celebration, with children and families invited to carry handmade lanterns through the park.<\/p>\n

Much of the event’s growth has been guided by organiser Mia Devani, who has helped shape the event over many years while maintaining its focus on creativity, inclusion and community connection.<\/p>\n

Chee said the event’s success reflected the efforts of volunteers, performers, stallholders and neighbourhood house participants who helped create a welcoming community celebration each year.<\/p>\n

The free event will run from 4.30pm to 7.30pm at West Park on 20 June.<\/p>\n
