{"id":132162,"date":"2026-06-15T04:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-06-14T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/?p=132162"},"modified":"2026-06-10T20:55:13","modified_gmt":"2026-06-10T10:55:13","slug":"planting-hope-for-local-koalas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/news\/planting-hope-for-local-koalas\/","title":{"rendered":"Planting hope for local koalas"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>KOALAS along the Barwon River are gaining vital refuge from a warming climate, with a local conservation group planting thousands of trees to restore the river corridors the species increasingly relies on for survival.<\/p>\n<p>The Koala Clancy Foundation has planted more than 185,000 trees along waterways including the Barwon, Moorabool and Little rivers since it was established in 2015.<\/p>\n<p>Founder Janine Duffy, who has worked with koalas since 1992, said the organisation was created to address a shortage of high-quality habitat in the region.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2026\/06\/KoalaClancyNB-2_70472.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Koala Clancy aim to plant 300,000 trees by 2030 and are already more than halfway to that target. Photo: Nyah Barnes.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;One thing that I found was that [koalas] really required is high-quality habitat beside rivers in our region,&#8221; she said. &#8220;No one was doing it, so we started to do it.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>With climate change intensifying heatwaves and drought, Duffy said river corridors would become increasingly important for the species.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Seven days of heat can effectively kill koalas,&#8221; she said. &#8220;More heatwaves, more droughts \u2026 will pretty much wipe out koalas.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/21\/2026\/06\/KoalaClancyNB-3_81501.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"800\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Koala Clancy team are dedicated to restoring koala habitats in the You Yang, Barwon River and surrounding regions. Photo: Nyah Barnes.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;People really appreciate being able to come [to our property],&#8221; Heike said. &#8220;[The volunteers] come and thank us for letting them plant trees here, and we&#8217;re like, thank you for planting here.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The benefits are already becoming evident.
