AFL Barwon has launched a major review of community football and netball aimed at strengthening the long-term future of local competitions across the region.<\/p>\n
The Barwon Blueprint will examine competition structures, club sustainability, participation pathways and operational challenges after clubs raised concerns about widening competitive gaps and increasing pressure on volunteers.<\/p>\n
A steering committee chaired by AFL Barwon chief executive Kate Patterson will develop recommendations for a long-term competition roadmap, including potential structural changes and transition plans by June next year.<\/p>\n
The committee will include representatives from the region’s four football and netball leagues, AFL Victoria, Netball Victoria and independent subject matter experts.<\/p>\n
Patterson said the Barwon region\u2019s historical success should not lead stakeholders into complacency.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are seeing clear sustainability challenges caused by competitive imbalance, and participation issues that impact long-term club viability in some parts of our region, while others are experiencing rapid growth,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis project is about taking a proactive, evidence-based approach to ensure our competitions remain strong, relevant and sustainable well into the future.<\/p>\n
\u201cImportantly, this process will be genuinely collaborative and consultative. Clubs, leagues, volunteers and key stakeholders will all have an opportunity to contribute to shaping the future direction of football and netball in our region.\u201d<\/p>\n
AFL Barwon board chair Ashley West said the project was focused on securing the long-term future of community sport rather than delivering short-term outcomes.<\/p>\n
\u201cCommunity sport is one of the foundations of our region. It brings people together, creates connection and provides opportunities for people of all ages to participate and belong,\u201d West said.<\/p>\n
\u201cTo protect that future, we must be prepared to have constructive conversations and make considered decisions that support the long-term sustainability of clubs and competitions across the region.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is not about winners and losers between leagues or clubs. It is about ensuring the entire ecosystem of community football and netball remains strong, competitive and viable for decades to come.\u201d<\/p>\n
Stakeholder consultation for the Barwon Blueprint will continue throughout 2026, with any recommendations adopted by AFL Barwon expected to be implemented from 2028.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
