They deserved fines, not suspensions, for accidental contact, but the bigger issue is why the umpire was standing in the middle of a flashpoint in the first place.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border-radius: 12px;\" src=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/embed\/episode\/0vxFk0BrGPbt4cPCyyeDQh?utm_source=generator&amp;t=303&amp;si=5dacb2febc654177\" width=\"100%\" height=\"152\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-testid=\"embed-iframe\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Ben Long&#8217;s two-match suspension for striking Maynard is a separate issue. I had no problem with that. It was a cheap shot, he got two weeks and everyone moves on.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">The debate starts after the siren.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Maynard was waiting for that siren. As soon as it sounded, he charged in from 30 or 40 metres away. That&#8217;s what escalated the situation. If he doesn&#8217;t make that run, I don&#8217;t think the melee reaches the level it did. If the AFL wanted to come down harder on someone, I would have looked more closely at the bloke who lit the fuse rather than the accidental contact that followed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">But once that melee starts, the umpire has one job. Get out of the way.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">We&#8217;re not back in the old days where umpires tried to physically split players apart. The game has changed. We have multiple camera angles, a Match Review Officer, fines, suspensions and club sanctions. Every incident is reviewed after the game. The umpire doesn&#8217;t have to become part of the action.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">The bit that made me laugh is the idea an umpire can stop a melee by telling players they&#8217;ll be fined.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">&#8220;Don&#8217;t do it, guys. You&#8217;ll get fined.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Seriously?<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Nobody in the middle of a heated confrontation is thinking about their bank account. They&#8217;re not weighing up whether it&#8217;s worth a $5,000 penalty. They&#8217;re reacting to emotion, to a teammate getting hit, or to a bloke charging straight at them after the siren.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">Standing there trying to calm players down by threatening fines isn&#8217;t achieving anything. In fact, it just creates another problem because now the umpire is in the firing line.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">That&#8217;s exactly what happened with Maynard and Miller. Neither player was trying to make contact with the umpire. Miller was trying to stop Maynard. Maynard was trying to get to Long. The contact was accidental because the umpire had inserted himself into the middle of a situation he couldn&#8217;t control.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">The AFL wants to eliminate umpire contact, and that&#8217;s fair enough. But if that&#8217;s the standard, then umpires also have to help themselves. Don&#8217;t put yourself in a position where players, running at full pace and focused on each other, have to avoid you as well.<\/p>\n<p class=\"isSelectedEnd\">The AFL landed in the right place by issuing fines instead of suspensions for the umpire contact.
