When you come on Sunday, you will see the exceptional skill of our players,&#8221; Savage said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;These are players that are looking to transition into [professional netball].<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It is incredibly fast, incredibly physical and those coming to a game for the first time will be amazed at how good our athletes are.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/07\/2026-07-0211.17.52_74056.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"600\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Geelong Cougars are ready to play their first home game at Geelong Arena on 12 July. Photo: Matthew O&#8217;Donnell\/Hails + Shine.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Championship player Carly Sanders echoed Savage&#8217;s sentiments, saying the entertainment value of the sport should not be underestimated.<\/p>\n<p>Eight of the Cougars&#8217; games this season have been decided by six goals or fewer, and Sanders expects another close contest.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;A lot of our games this year have been incredibly close, so it&#8217;s really entertaining to watch,&#8221; she said. &#8220;It&#8217;s edge of your seat stuff.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A Newcomb Power shooter, Sanders stepped into the Cougars&#8217; championship team for the first time this season.<\/p>\n<p>Having grown up playing basketball and previously with Supercats, she said returning to Geelong Arena with the Cougars feels special.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s a bit of a throwback for me coming back here. Looking around, I can just imagine what the atmosphere is going to be like here on Sunday,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>Like Sanders, most of the Cougars&#8217;headli players also compete for local clubs on Saturdays.<\/p>\n<p>She expects fans from clubs across the Geelong and Bellarine football netball leagues to attend and support their teammates.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_30038\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-30038\" style=\"width: 600px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-30038\" src=\"https:\/\/static.timesnewsgroup.com.au\/prod\/uploads\/sites\/2\/2026\/07\/2026-07-0211.21.58_14516.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"600\" height=\"600\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-30038\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Top level netball is no game of stop-and-pivot. Photo: Matthew O&#8217;Donnell\/Hails + Shine.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Savage said the close connection to local clubs was one of the Cougars&#8217; greatest strengths, with players remaining connected to the clubs that developed them while showcasing Geelong&#8217;s elite netball pathway.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is my 12th season with the Cougars and to watch players \u2013 whatever level they get to \u2013 achieve their best and develop as a player is really, really rewarding,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We take great pride in that most of our girls are from this area. Geelong is a great place for sporting talent and in particular for netball.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;ve seen so many of our girls from this region transition to SSN and SSM reserves and we&#8217;re really excited to be hosting a home game finally to showcase the talent pathways.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Geelong Cougars will play the Western Warriors at Geelong Arena on Sunday 12 July.<\/p>\n<p>The action will begin at 10.30am with an under-17 representative curtain-raiser, followed by the Cougars development team against the Cougars boys team at noon.<\/p>\n<p>VNL action starts at 1.30pm with the under-23s before the championship division takes the court at 3pm.<\/p>\n<p>For tickets, head to intix.com.au\/event\/victorian-netball-league-geelong-cougars<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>THE Geelong Cougars want the community to know top-level netball is no game of stop-and-pivot.
