	{"id":29548,"date":"2020-01-02T00:00:52","date_gmt":"2020-01-01T14:00:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/?p=29548"},"modified":"2020-01-02T00:00:52","modified_gmt":"2020-01-01T14:00:52","slug":"start-2020-right-using-tips-from-vichealth","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/timesnewsgroup.com.au\/geelongtimes\/living\/start-2020-right-using-tips-from-vichealth\/","title":{"rendered":"Start 2020 right using tips from VicHealth"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>VicHealth has compiled a list of top tips to help people maintain their health and wellbeing goals during the New Year holiday season. <\/p>\n<p>The foundation\u2019s chief executive officer Dr Sandro Demaio said the festive period was the \u201cperfect time\u201d to reflect upon entering 2020. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlthough the holiday season can be a busy time, it\u2019s important to try and slow down as much as possible.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTaking the time to make small changes over the break can make a big difference when it comes to forming new habits for yourself in the new year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s important to look after your mental wellbeing over the holiday season and if you can check in on people who may be going through a hard time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you\u2019re struggling, reach out to your loved ones for support, or speak to your health professional \u2013 they\u2019re there to help.\u201d <\/p>\n<p><strong>VicHealth\u2019s top tips include:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Add some colour to your plate<\/strong><br \/>\nWe all like to treat ourselves during the festive season, but you can still enjoy your favourite festive foods with a generous serving of veggies, salads and fruit. Aim to fill at least half your plate with veggies and salads.<br \/>\n<strong>Swap the cocktail for a mocktail<\/strong><br \/>\nTry starting the party with some fresh and fruity mocktails, and if you choose to drink an alcohol product stick to no more than four standard drinks in a session (a standard drink is roughly a pot of full-strength beer). Some mocktail recipes are available via vichealth.vic.gov.au.<br \/>\n<strong>Avoid the spin<\/strong><br \/>\nUnhealthy products like chocolates, soft drinks and alcohol are often heavily discounted at this time of year, making it easier to buy and consume more than you need. Before buying, have a think about whether you really want it or if you\u2019re just buying it because it\u2019s on special.<br \/>\n<strong>Get some decent sleep<\/strong><br \/>\nSleep is so important for physical and mental health and most people don\u2019t get enough of it. Getting into a regular bedtime routine is a great step towards a better night\u2019s sleep. And while you\u2019re at it, switch off your devices for an hour before bedtime for a more restful sleep.<br \/>\n<strong>Reach out<\/strong><br \/>\nNot everyone is lucky enough to have support over the holiday period.
